"Here's to us and those like us....damn few left."

Happy B-Day to Uncle Sam's Misguided Children.

A solemn wish for those serving/fighting and those supporting them from safer locations, there are no small jobs because they all help to get the job done and then get people home in one piece.

To all the salty 'formers' out there as well, today is a good day to relive the bootcamp experience and the rest of your service as well.

I walked in work today and one of my guards came walking over to me and said(with a big smile) you know what today is and he put his hand out. I'm thinking it's not the 11th yet, then I remember he's not only a vet but a Marine of 23 years.I shook his hand looking up at him(he's six ft four ) and I wished him a happy birthday.

As I do any and all of who have served.

Thank you.

Hi Paul,:partyon:

You beat me to it, that is good...Semper Fi...

My ID number was/is (this was before they went to SS#) 18701**.
Second Battalion Platoon 262 August of 1959...They were phasing in the L/Cpl rank at the time...

I am looking at my Graduation book right now as I type and glanced over at the shooting trophy for being High Expert in the Platoon and tied with the High Expert in the Battalion...:mp5:

Brings back some memories...

Yes, I have been following the war as of late since we are entering Fallujah.

I think people forget about the 'Devil Dogs' until they need them...Turn um loose and they are doing what they were taught.

Pretty impressive. In my way of thinking...I am grateful for them and others in the Service. Its our Birthday so we will Bark....

Regards, Gary

Sve Number was the social for me. I got out at E5. I am a Parris Island Marine - not a 'Hollywood Marine' :). I was with 3rd FSSG (Force Service Support Group), then Headquarters country club :).... I mean Marine Corps in Wash D.C. (N.Virginia) and use to cycle through Arlington Cemetery on my way to the Potomac fitness trail. I ran by the Iwojima memorial and pentagon all the time. I missed 'the fleet' but do have some great memories from DC. Finished out at India 3/25 here in Bflo before I switched over to USANG (105th MP company).

I 'won' the pugil pit for my platoon in the intrabattalion fights in boot. I spent most of my time just trying to make it from day to day. I still can remember laying in the dark for those few minutes before the DI flipped the lights on saying "30 minutes to breakfast" then after that it was "2 1/2 hours before lunch" and then there was "dinner" and lights out....that was how I got through the days. Funny how I missed that stuff.

Hi Paul,

Boy did us Hollywood Marines ( all 10 of us) catch it when we went aboard the Uss Canberra CAG-2 out of Norfolk in the spring of 1960.. But we proved our mettle and were thought of well...We took the scrubbing well... Ouch...

I really irritated the Hi shooter aboard ship when they gave the position to me... We were both good shots one time it was Mac and then the next it was myself, had a great time...

We stormed Virginia Beach many a time while in port. Recon...All the way.
He was from W VA and I have to tell you, the guy was hell on wheels!

I only made it to E-4 then when I left the ship I had to go back to L/cpl...

Running through the area you did, had to bring the pride to a swell. Ah yes the pugil stick, and they said it would not hurt with helmit and gloves, how about your ribs and the rest of your unprotected mass.

I turned down Embassy duty, went back to the West coast and served out my time as a 'Chief of Staffs', Driver at Pendelton...

Yes those were the days my friend, we thought they would never end....

But now we are here...I am one lucky guy...Take care.

Regards, Gary

Did you get to take the anti-terrorist/VIP (or what ever the called it then) driving course when you took the job? When I was in drivers of VIP types could go with unit recommendation/requirements and got to kill the transmission on Dodge Dynasty's daily doing bandit turns, power slides and other fun 'DUKES OF HAZARD' style high speed vehicle moves. Even some smash up derby style roadblock breaking and car ramming techniques....

of course the number of opportunites to use said skills were far and few between then (except for the really irritating granny who drives too slow is in front of you :)).

Hi Paul,

That course was not one I took, but I did have to do some of my own training,
I was the Captains driver aboard ship when we were in port (overseas) we would not stop for nothing... I mean that...

One time when we were in India, and it was raining buckets we had an India military escort and following them was a trick, we went on liberty with them.
We were coming back from the bar and it was raining and there were three of us on his Motorcycle(driver and passengers). Oh well. you had to have been there.

When in Pendelton and having the war games in 29 Palms, the Chief of Staff his Adj. and myself driving (the mighty mite) as fast as I can across the desert to avoid capture and the Major (adj) sitting on his helmet in the rear yelling for me to slow down, its only a game...Yea..right...

We got back safe and sound. The Colonel said, good job Marine... That was good enough for me.

We won the whole thing, if the Chief of Staff, had been captured it would not have looked to good... I out ran everything, they did say it was reckless, but well done...
Turned out the Mighty Mite was a real death trap... To much speed and not enough protection.

Just like on the Job with LAPD lots of officers DOA at the scene of the TA.
Others too, I am glad the new Chief has done some pulling off of hot pursuits.

Regards, Gary

General M.W. Hagee is the Commandant of the Marine Corps. He has issued the following birthday message:
Two hundred and twenty-nine years ago, the Second Continental Congress established a Corps of Marines to fight for a democratic people's independence. Since then countless Marines have raised their hand and sworn to defend our Nation's freedoms and preserve its liberties. This year's anniversary again finds Marines engaged throughout the globe for the same noble purposes. The bravery, heroism and selflessness of all Marines—wherever they are serving—have added significantly to our rich legacy and measured up to the high standards that have come to epitomize all who wear the eagle, globe and anchor.

The current battlefields of the global war on terror are linked to the storied campaigns of our past by an unbroken tradition of proud and loyal service. At New Providence, Chapultepec, Belleau Wood, Tarawa, Iwo Jima, the Chosin Reservoir, Con Thien, Kuwait and now in places like Fallujah, Marines have consistently demonstrated a dedication to duty, a commitment to warfighting excellence, and a devotion to each other that has instilled a fierce determination to overcome seemingly impossible challenges. Our warrior ethos is and will continue to be the Corps' hallmark.

The fortitude and sacrifices of Marines and their families have been vital in protecting our Nation from those who would do us harm. Whether preparing and sustaining our agile force or engaged in battle, the esprit de corps, tireless energy, calm courage and inspired leadership of Marines continue to make a monumental difference in this world. Your unselfish dedication and significant accomplishments—demonstrated repeatedly over this past year in numerous places such as the Anbar province of Iraq, Afghanistan, the Horn of Africa, Haiti and in the crucial job here at home supporting our deployed forces—are deeply respected and valued by your fellow Americans.

Marines, as we celebrate with friends and families the founding of our beloved Corps, you should take pride in our long history of distinguished service to this great Nation and its citizens. I ask you to remember especially the sacrifices of our fallen and wounded comrades. Finally, rededicate yourselves to taking care of one another and ensuring we remain the finest warfighting organization in the world.

Happy Birthday, Marines. Semper Fidelis, and Keep Attacking!

RIP LPW 1955-1990
