DVD code cracker goes legitimate

PARIS: Like Napster and others before him, "DVD Jon" has gone legitimate. But is it too late? Has the sun already set on digital rights?
Jon Lech Johansen, the Norwegian teenager who helped crack the code on copying DVDs almost a decade ago, shared it with the world and won against Big Media in court, emerged from stealth mode in San Francisco this week with a new business called DoubleTwist.
It is so aboveboard - at least compared with Johansen's prior projects, which most recently included picking the software locks on the iPhone - that two brand-name European venture capital firms are investing in the company for undisclosed sums.
DoubleTwist's goal is software that manages digital media and lets consumers move files among any kinds of hardware - camera, mobile phone, computer, MP3 player, camcorder - and share them with others, regardless of the copying restrictions placed on them by media companies.
DVD Jon goes legitimate... must've grown up. Well, he just paved the way for future hackers to have a... well, a future.
