The World's Most Powerful People

1 Barack Obama - President, United States of America

Has the President of the US ever not topped this list?
2.Angela Merkel - Chancellor, Germany
3.Vladimir Putin - President, Russia
Former head of the infamous KGB
4.Bill Gates - Cochair, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Wealthy, famous, sure, powerful in the same league as Heads of State, no.
5.Pope Benedict XVI - Pope, Roman Catholic Church
To quote Stalin: How many divisions has he got?
6.Ben Bernanke - Chairman, U.S. Federal Reserve
If that is true, it is sad to the point of being deplorable.
7.Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz al Saud - King, Saudi Arabia
Sorry, no.
8.Mario Draghi - President, European Central Bank
See my comments on Bernanke
9.Xi Jinping - General Secretary, Communist Party of China
10.David Cameron - Prime Minister, United Kingdom
Sad that the leader of the empire is so low on this list...

:nods sagely: It's probably best to ... maybe he's not had a sufficient quantity of trees to terrorise lately? :)

Try re-editing your post in the Advanced thingumy, Don. See if there are any weird links in the multi-quote.

What is the reason that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is not on the list by the way? Given that she has the power to tell the Prime Minister to go and think things through again if she so chooses, that would rank her at least above Call Me Dave.

She is so powerful, she can stay off the radar...

Actually I think the bankers ought to top it, with Bill gates (90% of the worlds computers run on windows...the other 10 try to emulate it)

Then the Pope... he has the world's largest spy network....

then...
the Saudi King....

then the rest.
US President? Not really.

I do agree that it is important to draw a distinction between 'open' power and 'hidden' influence. The latter is often under-played on purpose and so not given the credence it deserves.

ok, something went incredibly wonky in the underlying code that handled the formatting. Had to literally rewrite the post to fix it. Should be ok. Don, if anythings missing let me know and I'll fix it for ya.

i love how Ban Ki-moon, incumbent secretary general of the UN, is not on the list, and no ones mentioning it. You know, the UN that's supposed to enforce international law, and find a way to achieve world peace. Glad to see its doing such a great job that the person who is basically its leader isn't even on the list.

I think this list fails to take into consideration media types as well....not the talking heads, but rather the people who own them. Control the media, you can control the way people think to a certain extent and that is certainly very powerful.

All powerful men, sure. But not as powerful as the women they live with, the ones that give the daily orders. (Oh, yes they do!)

As Themistocles said,
Athens rules all Greece; I control Athens; my wife controls me and my infant son controls her.
So it's really the babies of those men who have all the power :uhyeah:
