Within Japan, whaling is no longer seen as a traditional activity. It is not profitable, nor is whale meat a popular food; yet Japan is happy to damage its international image by continuing to harvest whales.
Instead of dwelling on who's right and who's wrong, Japan could be using government resources and money spent on whaling operations to conduct proper research voyages in the Antarctic region that could enhance the nation's image as a leader in the scientific community while creating more jobs. The destruction of Japan's international image from the whaling issue poses the question, is the continuation of whaling in the best interests of the Japanese people?
