Q Tires feature retractable studs that emerge when the driver flicks a switch inside the car. When the snow and ice melt, all it takes is another flip of the switch _ and voila _ the studs hide back under the treads and the tires are transformed again.
Cool idea! Looks like they may be available within a year or two. I wonder how much four of them would really cost....

Lots. But I've had studded snow tires, and short of chains, they're the best you can get. The downside: a lot of municipalities have banned them for chewing up and spitting out thousands of miles of roadway. If these retractable studded versions prove fully automatic as promised, the laws might change to allow them. The problem with standard studded tires is that folks just forget to change them once when winter's over, or can't be bothered.
