When using joint locks for pain compliance, disarming, H2H ... how do you alter your follow-up techniques for various circumstances? For instance, an LEO would most likely continue the pain compliance until the suspect is cuffed and stuffed. How about the street? Other combat or competition situations?

Always depends on the individual circumstance. If I'm in a situation that might keep me from getting home to my family (ever) then my follow up is to destroy the joint and put a complete and total end to the fight. If it's a bar fight and I figure the guy is just to drunk to know when to say when then it's to the floor and hold with moderate pain until the police arrive (always leaving myself in a position to defend against other attackers and torque down if he starts to struggle). If it's grandpa at the christmas party then I'll just kick his cane out from under him till granny gets there with the rolling pin. :ultracool
