anyone have any ideas or experiences about ways to train that
let you chose and apply techs against a resisting partner in
life-like ways? my school has a lot of sparring (kickboxing, san shou,
jiu-jitsu, stick stuff) but i'd also like to try some sort of training scenario
that let me work the techs against some resistance. ideas?

Try having a partner counter the various strikes and attacks that you throw at them. It's pretty good training to try to develop ones adaptability.

Try giving points for effectivity to the defendant (1 to 5). I had my "boca del estómago" (the point were the sternum ends and the stomach begins) nicely kicked yesterday after awarding two 3s to the defendant. He got the third kick right in place and it took me some minutes to recover.

It still hurts a bit :S

I believe that once you learn a tech. then you should gradually move up the ladder, having your partner add more and more resistance. For example, in my BJJ class, my Inst. teaches us a tech. He has us do it over and over so we can get the feel of it. Then he gradually has one person start to add resistance. IMO, that is something that should always be done, but unfortunately is overlooked in alot of schools.
