Buffalo's shrinking population and snowfall rank high on the "Forbes Misery Measure."

Buffalo among 'America's 10 Most Miserable Cities'

By Mark Sommer
News Staff Reporter

Buffalo ranks high on a new list compiled by Forbes, but it's not one the Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau will be touting any time soon.
Buffalo was listed eighth among what Forbes calls "America's 10 Most Miserable Cities."

No. 1 Stockton, Calif.
No. 2 Memphis, Tenn.
No. 3 Chicago, Ill.
No. 4 Cleveland, Ohio

No. 5 Modesto, Calif.
No. 6 Flint, Mich.
No. 7 Detroit, Mich.
No. 8 Buffalo, N.Y.
No. 9 Miami, Fla.
No. 10 St. Louis, Mo.

Interesting list. Can't say I disagree with the Buffalo assessment. This town's been dying slowly for over 40 years. Planning is stuck in political favoritism and corruption and a lack of vision.

I am shocked that Kansas city is not on that list or Los Angeles.

I was excited and perplexed at seeing neighboring Shelby, MI at #62 then I read the details:

"Not to be confused with Shelby, a town of just 1,191 people on the other side of the Michigan "mitten," Shelby Township is a northern suburb of Detroit."

Kansas City's really not that bad. Not the most exciting place in the world, but the relatively low cost of living affords you a lot of opportunities that might not be available elsewhere. Overland Park, listed as number 9 in Bob's list of the top 10 cities, is a suburb of Kansas City as is Olathe (11). And the barbecue is amazing, which is one of the reasons KC is usually on the top 10 fat cities list.

My older brother was set for a promotion and raise and ready to take over the Memphis office of the company he works for. However, thankfully, the economy helped wrecked those plans and thus he may be regulated to somewhere else. He really wasn't too enthusiastic about moving there in the first place anyway.
For Tennessee, Memphis is a blight being the largest city of the state.

Cleveland only got 4th??? It's worse than that...

As a cousin I have that is from Cleveland calls it...The Mistake by the Lake. Of course he always adds the only place that the water could (and did) catch on fire

Yup...We have a lake that is eerie and a landmark that is terminal...LOL

Bah! I dont put any stock in these "Top 10 articles..", the "science" behind the decision making is suspect at best.

Life is what you make it no matter where you live.

3. Naperville, IL

Indeed. If you can Afford a private airplane and a House with a Runway in place of a driveway and a private hanger instead of a garage, then Naperville is the place to live.

Also if you don't mind bordering Aurora, the suburban GHETTO

I live in Toronto (well just outside) and I have to say Buffalo is a lost opportunity, beautiful area and the populace is bright and capable.

I think they should invest in wineries, just across the border on the Canadian side there are a bunch of wineries that have a associated high end restaurants, basically a huge and profitable adult tourist area.

I see no reason why the same can't be done across the border.

Because it makes sense, and my 38 years here have shown that WNY is still stuck in the 19th century. They've been arguing over a new bridge to Canada for over a decade, been begging BASS Pro Shop to come in, even going so far as to offer to pay them to set up shop (while other cities charge them I might add), they gave away a chunk of downtown for an indian casino that's tied up in legal red tape, built a subway to nowhere, downtown is dead, crime is rising, unemployement is skyrocketing, and the so called leadership is like a headless chicken.

Thanks Bob, it is a sad commentary, Buffalo/Niagara Region could be the equivalent of Napa/Sonoma valley in California, if only there was the will to do it. I suggest any board members come around and visit in the summer and fall, an absolutely beautiful area.

Bob,

Buffalo was never the same after Irv Weinstein retired from Channel seven. Seriously, Torontonians know of your Buffalo. That's where we get our American TV from.

Hey, maybe the Cleveland Indians would be interested in moving to Buffalo!?!

Just stop it!

Syracuse gets way more snow than you do, and events/school are often not called off until we are already out in it.

Our city government is like Tammany Hall without the class, downtown looks like Blade Runner. We have the worst college football team in the galaxy.

Traffic resembles LA.... road construction is always ongoing and never effective. Nepotism is taken for granted and corruption viewed as entreprenurial genius. The only people still working are illegals.

The main newspaper isn't fit for puppy training. Even the malls, the lowlites of our kulture, are closing.

Our only consolation is that we are not Rochester.
