I was in the back yard taking the girls playset apart and I had to kick a piece of wood to get it to come off. In order to kick it I had to stand on a wooden post that was laying in its side like a balance beam. This meant I had to execute a front kick while not falling off.

Then the idea came. Why not have a kicking drill where the kicker is on a balance beam type thing (a 4x4 post on its side on the floor would work). The idea is that the kicker is not allowed to touch the floor at all, only the beam. It would help teach balance before, during and after a kick.

A variation of this idea is common in Chinese training methods. They're called plum blossom poles. Not quite the same as a long balance beam, but you get the idea.

When I was a kid, we used to play a game in which two people would stand on one foot on a single tile (10-12" floor tile) and then kick at each other. The kicking leg cannot touch the floor, nor can you move off your square.

Reminds me of the Karate Kid...

I'm going to try this Monday night.
