hey whassup. it's me hanzo, the guy u love to hate. just wanted to let u know my taekwondo has been going well and i have my blackbelt test on Sunday. Wish me luck.
as for the question i have pertaining to wingchun, what makes it work against street fighting and self-defense situations? i am pretty much decided that i'm going to take WC after i get my black belt. I just need to be re-assured that i'm investing my money into something good. i checked out a school this past weekend and i liked it. his name is Ingo weigel of the Emin Boztepe Martial Arts System. i think he's very good, i just forgot to ask him the same question i'm asking u guys. i'm gonna see him again soon, but i just wanted to put that question out there. thanks a lot.

There are a few different reasons why one could claim that Wing chun is good

1. One of the most populer MA's

2. Foundational Art that Bruce Lee built his JKD on (and by the way if you watch all of his movies including "enter the Dragon" you will note that he was still employing a fair amount of Wing Chun).

3. Built squarly on fundamental principals such as Centre line, economy of motion, Angles of attack defense, simultanious attack and defense.

4. Deals primaraly with the "in-fight" which is where a lot of people (especially untrained people) cannot fight all that well.

These are just some of the reasons why in my opinion you should learn wing chun, and where you will not be wasting your money

However...

Consider very carefully where it is that you study Wing Chun, as I have posted elsewhere, Wing chun is an effective art if you learn it properly, but if you try to learn in a strength orientated way vv a natural structure way, your Wing chun will be less effective (which is why the art was developed by a woman). A lot of so called Wing chun schools lend themselves to teaching in the strength orientated way, which has left many people disapointed and claiming that WC is no good. I dont know a lot about Emin Boztepe, but I would suggest that when looking at a WC school that you would consider a few things.

1. Check their Lineage, as a rule of thumb check out those who are closest in Lineage to Yip Man, and see how close that teacher is to the lineage, it can actually be a positive thing

2. Check to see how much Marketing is going on, marketing is good but you know sometimes you just dont want to hear someone running around claimin that they are the true Grand Master of Wing chun

3. check out their attitude (linked to 2). Are they of a humble nature? then you are actually on a winner, one of the best WC proponants today (apart from my sifu :) ) would have to be choy seung tin, if you have never heard of him, I am not surprised, its because he doesn't blow his own horn, yet his skill is actually quite incredible from the little I have seen of him. Arrogant and cocky people tend to be self centerd and there motivatin for teaching is usually straight down the line its about the dollar. This means that they tend to treat their students as a commodity as aopposed to a person, and they tend to give "specialised" knowledge away at a cost (not necessaraly financial.

These are just my opinions hope they help somewhat
