On the 9th June the Queen's Birthday Honours list was announced. Big list, 450 civilians and maybe 200 military and civil service personnel. An interesting thing was the inclusion of the former Prime Minister as a Companion of the Order of Australia. Its very unusual for a government formed by a different party to recommend a former PM (they usually have to wait until their party is in power again).

Almost 450 civilians have received awards, with public servants, emergency service workers and armed forces personnel also recognised for exemplary service.
Females make up 138 of those honoured against 320 men, with 297 OAMs awarded.
Queen's Birthday Honours, which began in 1975, celebrate the outstanding contributions and achievements of a diversity of Australians.

The interesting thing about this year's list for me is that I actually personally know two of the military recipients of the AM (Member of the Order of Australia), the second level of the Order.

By the way, the Queen's birthday isn't actually in June (its 21 April), but the day is actually close to the actual birthday of King Georrge III (4 June 1738), and has been celebrated at this time since 1788 when the first Governor of NSW declared the King's birthday a holiday. Up until 1936 it used to move around with the monarch's actual birthdate, but now it is just the second Monday in June (except in West Australia where it in September or October). Other parts of the Commonwealth celebrate it on different days.
