Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year) of the Tiger

Arnold, MD - The Jing Ying Institute near Annapolis, Maryland is holding its
annual celebration of the Chinese New Year with its "Weeks of Workshops."
This year, Sunday, February 14, 2010 marks the first day of Chinese New Year
- the Year of the Tiger. The first day is "double lucky" as it is also
Valentine's Day, but the celebration lasts for two weeks. The following are
some of the events that are open to the general public and do not require
any previous experience.

Saturday, February 13, - Free Demonstration of Lion Dance, Kung Fu & Tai
Chi at Francis Scott Key Mall in Frederick

Sunday, February 14 - Free Lion Dance performances at various local
restaurants.

Monday, February 15 - Tea Tasting: Top 10 Teas of China, Part 1 from 7:00 pm
to 9:00 pm. Presented by The East West Tea Emporium in Arnold, and led by
Lynayn Mielke, a tea professional with Level III Certification from the
Specialty Tea Institute. You'll get to try several teas, learn about their
proper preparation, and learn about their health benefits. Space is limited
and there is a $10 registration fee.

Tuesday, February 16 - Free Natural Cold and Flu prevention workshop from
7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Presented by Dr Fang of Annapolis. Dr Fang is a highly
respected medical doctor trained in western and Chinese medicine.

Wednesday, February 17 - Free Kids Kung Fu class from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
Suitable for children from 5 to 10, this workshop will include an
introductory lesson in Kung Fu, will provide information on the Chinese New
Year, and will teach some of the basics of Chinese Lion Dance. A child-size
lion head is available for the kids to practice with as well as drums,
cymbals and gong.

Friday, February 19 - Free Chinese Culture and New Year Traditions (for
children) from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

Friday, February 19 - Chinese Calligraphy workshop from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.
Learn basic brush strokes and characters from Chinese Calligraphy. Space is
limited and there is a $5.00 registration fee.

Saturday, February 20 - Martial Hearts for Haiti Fundraiser from 5:30 pm to
11:00 pm. A kick-a-thon with students performing 1,000 kicks interspersed
with kung fu demonstrations will start the event. There will be Caribbean
themed food and refreshments and around 7:00 pm DJs will provide music and
lights for a Caribbean themed dance party. Suggested donation of $10 per
person. All proceeds go to CARE for Haitian relief efforts

Monday, February 22 - Free Beginners Tai Chi, 18 Movement Form workshop from
7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Practice silk-reeling exercises and basic tai chi
movements. Discover how this ancient and low-impact form of exercise
promotes joint health, improves flexibility and strength, and increases bone
density. Instructional DVD available for purchase.


Tuesday, February 23 - Free Women's Self-defense workshop from 7:00 pm to
8:30 pm. Designed for pre-teens and adults and ideal for mothers and
daughters. Learn basic skills for avoiding trouble, escaping, and fighting
back.

Saturday, February 27, 2008 - Open House from noon to 2:00 pm. At noon there
will be a Lion Dance performance followed by Kung Fu and Tai Chi
demonstrations. At 1:00 pm there will be a free introduction to kung fu
class. Refreshments and door prizes will be provided during the open house.
