What should a [hypothetical] new EPAK student be concentrating on in the first few months of training? Suppose he has a background in classical karate and is familar with stances and strikes from traditional systems. What questions or common themes should he focus on, especially if he will be taking private lessons only?

While many stances, strikes, and kicks will be similar from art to art, there of course, will be differences. If the main learning is going to take the form of privates, that would be a good time to focus on the changes. Learn the names/terms that are used, stances, techs./kata.

Your instructor should be able to look at your past experience and determine the proper pace for you.

I would start right back with the basics and also pick up the Kenpo books by Ed Parker and read up.
Prof. Lee Wedlake has some great books out also.
