The First Manitoba Open of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Submission Grappling will take place on April 22, 2006.

Will be held in St.Paul's highschool in Tuxedo with brand new mats, four competition areas and a warm up area. It will be a round robin format - no single elimination (except absolute division).

Matches will be 5 Min Long for Begginer divisions Gi and no Gi or first to reach 10 points, 2 points will be awarded for a victory by points and 3 by submission. In the advanced divisions matches will be 6 Minutes long for Gi and No Gi or first to reach 10 points , Same point system for Advanced Division. For the Gi, white belts are considered Begginers, blue and up will fight in the advance division. For the no gi , begginers are 2 years and under experience. More news to come.

-------------------------------------------------------

Anyone in Winnipeg or surrounding area come by and support the BJJ/sub grap community by competing!! There is guaranteed great competition as we already have confirmation from teams from as far away as Edmonton.

The city of Winnipeg has a great grappling community and is growing all the time. This event just goes to prove how established the sport is becoming. So, if you have any desire to test what you have been learning in a friendly, but competitive atmosphere, mark your calendars.

Just some additional info.

There will be a series of fantastic superfights at this event. The best grapplers in the city from the best gyms have been most gracious in stepping forward when asked to do a superfight. You will see the best that Winnipeg and the prairie provinces have to offer on the mat April 22nd.

I would especially like to encourage any female grapplers within driving distance of Winnipeg to make the effort to come on out and make it a great day. Nothing more disappointing than training hard, making weight and having no one to roll with. There are both gi and no-gi divisions so no excuses! Winning doesn't matter...having fun does.

Hey there! I just heard through the grapevine that some local grapplers may not be heading out to the tournament because of a couple of issues. One, they thought they needed a "team". That isn't necessary at all. Very often grapplers travel by themselves to compete, there is no requirement for team status.

Secondly, they thought they may not be able to afford it. Well the pricing structure is one of the cheapest I have ever encountered at a grappling tourney. The costs are very reasonable :

Early Register Discount:
Register by April 15th and get $5.00 off of your registration price listed below)

$25.00 for One Division (Gi or No-Gi)
$35.00 for both Divisions
Spectator Fee: $5.00

So now, all you Winnipeger's - no excuses! If you aren't familiar with the rules of such a tourney contact Rodrigo and he would be more than happy to familiarize you.

REMINDER
Remember to pre-register by April 15 to get the early-registration savings!!

It helps everyone to run a smooth tournament if we know who to put in which bracket.

On another note...looks like lots of disciplines will be competing in this tournament. Wrestlers, judo, JJ, hapkido as well as BJJ and sub grap people will be out for some friendly competition. So, if you are within driving distance it will be well worth your time to check out this new event (hint for all Minnesotans and ND people on this board!:)).

We have also had good response for women and children so looks like there will be divisions for everyone. Remember, if we support local events it helps the sport as a whole. So if you are a grappler's grappler - you don't want to miss this. Put ego aside and come roll with the best our area has to offer.

The 1st Manitoba Open was a huge success! We had the best grapplers from Winnipeg as well as competitors from Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta and North Dakota. There were close to 130 competitors in both gi and no gi divisions.

I'd like to thank a few of the Martial Talkers who expressed interest in the event and even though you were unable to attend this one, I hope you will be able to attend the one that we hope to put on in October.
