I was wondering if anyone has made thier own makiwra on here? I made one about 4 months ago. I took a 8ft 4x4 and sawed the top foot off to one inch in width. I then burried it 2 and a half feet into the ground and put concrete in the base of it. I then duct tape straw to the top covered by rope. It works fairly good but I am not to happy with the striking portion of it. The straw wears thin after a week and I have to add more to it.

A school I used to train in had a couple Makiwara. We had 1 inch thick cotton rope wound around teh striking portion, and that was all. The roped lasts a long time.

The guy with the red top on made that at home and brought it in as a gift to the instructor. It is a wonderful training tool. It offers alot of resistance that a punching bag cannot, it helps to condition your body to strike hard without hurting yourself. Once you get used to hitting on something that will not give much, and then you hit a person, it feels like you are hardly hitting them because the soft human body absorbs blows. And it makes you want to hit them even harder. A great training tool I love it!
