There is no single training element that's essentials. All the parts of kenpo exist to teach basic principals of movement and anatomy. You could lose them all and replace them with modern interpretive dance...so long as those underlying principals remained in place.

On the other hand, the technique-kata-freestyle structure is much of what differentiates kenpo from other arts.

correct basics, you can already see what happens when people don't have correct basics, the rest falls apart
