Dick Cheney told us that we would be at war for the rest of our natural lives. People thought he was talking about himself. He was talking about you and I.

How is this any different then…always?

This has been going on by Nation-States for thousands of years. Look at the French, The Brits, the Japanese, the Chinese, the Ottomans, the Romans, whoever. There will always be people or states that will challenge or threaten another people or state. You have two choices, you can either fight or roll over.

Wars against terrorists are almost always won covertly. You will never here about the 95% of what really is going on.

The way wars are being fought these days, anyone can step up to the plate, and give us a pretty good go of it. War on terror, just like the war on crime, is on going and, never ending. I say Lieberman is right.

As long as we're at "war" we have an instant excuse for any right violating laws and acts we want to push. Want to harass a photographer? 9/11. Want to take a protesters sign? "homeland security". Want to deny access to someone? "We're at war". Feel like shooting someone? "He looked like someone we're at war with". Instant excuse.

I might be offended by that comment if it didn't have merit.

If we spent 1/4 the resources on education that we spend on the military we'd solve a lot more of our problems.

I think America needs to bring all it's troops home, close all bases, cease ALL foreign aid, and fortify our borders. Give the world 10 years without American aid, American money, American charity, and American blood. Be interesting to see what happens.

Given the amount of overseas trade America is involved in, Im not sure how you could dismantle that aspect of things without serious damage to the American economy. Especially given the reliance on oil. The others are more managable if you're looking at it purely internally. Although the arms industry could get rather unhappy.

Oh trade is fine, non-military of course. But, lets close the bases and put those millions of dollars back in the US economy, not some hostile nations for example.
