Is it just a question of the length of the blade for edged weapons that determines whether they are legal to carry?

I would imagine the law for impact weapons varies slightly?

Which State has the least restrictions in terms of what weapons can be carried around legally, concelead?

Final point,is there much variation between States?

Each state has its own laws, and they are not really similar. There's no real generic rule that you can apply. Often the legality of something will turn on an arcane distinction, like whether or not it has a hilt, or the specific construction of an impact weapon. The best advice is to contact the states where you plan to spend time, and find out their rules. Realize that some cities have laws that are even more restrictive than the overall law in the state, as well.
