"I'm sure the made for TV movie will straighten out all of the details for us."

Bin Laden's death will actually be made into a Disney Movie, so generations of children can learn about the greatness of our WOT.

In a perfect example of a big media company looking to capitalize on current events, The Walt Disney Company has trademarked Seal Team 6, which also happens to be the name of the elite special forces team that killed Osama Bin Laden.

The trademark applications came on May 3rd, two days after the operation that killed Bin Laden and two days after Seal Team 6″ was included in thousands of news articles and TV programs focusing on the operation.

Disneys trademark applications for Seal Team 6″ cover clothing, footwear, headwear, toys, games and entertainment and education services, among other things.

Merchandise and movies and maybe even a cartoon series! My eyes have seen the glory!

Disney has -applied- for them.

Not granted yet

Current Status: New application will be assigned to an examining attorney approximately 3 months after filing date.

I suspect that the trademark will fall through, unless Disney stresses the Seal part with a showing of a particular concept. SEAL Team 6 has been used in too many ways in fiction, semi-fiction, and factual accounts for Disney to try to assert control of the term so broadly. A particular use, like a team of pinniped warriors, a la Mutant Ninja Turtles? Maybe.

Actually... I discovered it's already been advanced! http://www.navysealscartoon.com/index.html

It might be denied, but I'm thinking it has a pretty good shot. We'll see what happens in August...

Considering the PO allowed the trademarking of a common word in 1 case I'm aware of, I expect this to go through. Most trademark applications are rubber stamped these days it seems.

Seal Team 6 has never been an official name of any of the Teams. It was a misnomer used in the early days of the first Team created to make the Russians think there were more people involved than there was.

The group that did this raid has another call sign/name, and it was NEVER Seal Team 6...

Even if it isn't the real name, Seal Team 6 will be the group of heros that killed Bin Laden. The story is going to be immortalized by Disney, never mind any facts about what actually happened.

Come, come now. They managed to keep it historically accurate in Pocahontas, not to mention staying so close to the original stories in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Alladin, and The Sword in the Stone.

I'm sure they'll apply that same sense to the preservation of the original facts on this one.

It was a JSOC operation most likely and as such was probably a mixed team of SEALS and "Delta" operators (and most likely the CIA SAD too). You will never hear an official government statement stating that Delta exists...the SEALS are known everywhere. Therefore it's much easier to just say "SEALS did it".

There were no joint operations on this event, other than with Joint Services Intel input. It was solely a Seal op. Also the "Delta" team has been renamed as well, and before it was renamed, it was an acknowledged team. The Team members were not "known", but the existence of the team was verified by the Government on many occasions.

Seal Team 6, was used and created by Richard Marchinko when they created the unit to be an elite unit within the SEALS. The reason they picked "6" is because there were only two SEAL teams (west/east coast) and they picked the number to make others think that we had more SEAL teams than just the two.

The team has ALWAYS been called "Seal Team 6" and has been since it's inception. If you want to watch an interesting documentary, get a hold of "Red Cell" and read the book "Rogue Warrior". It goes more into the history of the team and how it was founded, although, I'm sure there is a bit of exageration/hype with the stories as well to sell the book.

Hello Punisher, in my talking with the Teams (and working with them when I was an Army SF Medic) their telling was that it was never called Team 6, except to the Russians. I have the book, and read it, and I've seen Red Cell. The PUBLIC called it Team 6, based on the "releases" given, but the Teams NEVER called it such. And still don't. I have seen their "official" name, it isn't Team 6...

Disney lost to Columbia Pictures apparently.

http://www.longislandpress.com/2011/05/27/osama-bin-laden-movie-film-depicting-raid-in-the-works/

Columbia Pictures has won distribution rights for a film that will focus on the raid that killed the man behind the September 11 World Trade Center attacks, Osama bin Laden.
The movie is set to be directed by Kathryn Bigelow, the Oscar-winng filmmaker of Iraq bomb squad hit movie The Hurt Locker.

<img src=http://secure.quantserve.com/pixel/p-02uqnnIGWyZdo.gif style=&quot;display:none;&quot; border=&quot;0&quot; height=&quot;1&quot; width=&quot;1&quot; alt=&quot;Quantcast&quot;/> <a href=&quot;http://adserver.adtechus.com/adlink...oc=300;key=key1+key2+key3+key4;grp=0804&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;><img src=&quot;http://adserver.adtechus.com/adserv...oc=300;key=key1+key2+key3+key4;grp=0804&quot; border=&quot;0&quot; width=&quot;300&quot; height=&quot;250&quot;></a>

Bigelow and The Hurt Locker screenwriter Mark Boal had already been working on a film about bin Ladens killing or capture before his death on May 2. They were planning to center it around SEAL Team 6&#8242;s unsuccessful hunt for the al Qaeda leader, but quickly changed the plans once the news was announced.

Bigelow and Boal have been developing the project since 2008 and plan to incorporate recent events into the film, Amy Pascal of Columbias parent company Sony Pictures Entertainment said in a statement.

It's different then trademarking Seal Team Six, but the results will be the same.
