“Internal” Chinese Martial Arts for Full Contact Fighting

When people mention Internal Martial Arts, the first thing that comes to mind is seniors moving slowly in a park while practicing Taijiquan; nothing could be farther from the truth.

Last April The Three Harmonies Chinese Martial Arts Center in Seattle WA, under the guidance of his instructor Jake Burroughs organized a combatives training seminar with one of the top teachers of the "Internal" Arts; Tim Cartmell Laoshi, who is an expert in various systems that include Taijiquan, Xing Yi I, Baguazhang and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu just to name a few. Tim is a champion of Lei Tai style of fighting in Taiwan as well as several times winner of BJJ tournaments in Brazil.

The participants of the seminar were exposed in the first two sessions to a great deal of details on the theories for successful sacrifice throws followed with a section on how to apply the triangle choke from different positions, a great number of tips and suggestions were taught to the attendees that covered other aspects of the ground game.

The second half of the seminar dealt with the applications of the Xing Yi’s Hawk and Swallow; striking applications and several ways the forms can be used for throws and take downs. An emphasis on good posture as well as correct body mechanics was emphasized. Tim also clarified that the forms are not intended to mimic the animal per se, instead the energy/attitude of it. The Baguazhang Sun Style section covered Single and Double Palm changes, followed with several examples of sweeps, throws and take downs that are contained within the palms. An important point that was made during the CMA sections was that the practitioner should not limit his/her understanding of a specific move contained in a form by visualizing only one application, instead one should be aware that a specific move could have different uses depending of the situation.

Tim’s expertise in the "Internal" Arts’ fighting applications and BJJ has been successfully translated to the popular MMA style competitions, with several of his fighters wining in different events. One of the things that impresses about Tim’s style of teaching is how easy he can describe the principles that lie within the techniques in order to make them work, as well as his openness to teach what other teachers of the Chinese Martial Arts consider “secret”. In sum, any practitioner of the CMA or even MMA would certainly improve his/her game by attending any of Tim’s seminars.
