"I used the following de-escalation techniques as a police officer and I taught them to other cops in the academy. Do they work all the time? No. When dealing with the human condition, there isn’t any technique that is a 100-percent sure thing. That said, these simple techniques worked more times than not."

My sincerest appreciation to Loren Christiansen for his kind permission for putting up to my site.

Most of that is pretty much standard in any good self defence martial arts class. The leave me alone stance is something that is taught in my school, it has all the characteristics of a guarding block without looking threatening but it can be hard to maintain for an extended period without them catching on. Speaking slowly seems more of a natural response to someone who is trying to calm someone else down. Most of the rest is just common sense really.

My, "leave me alone!" stance puts my hands closer to my body. No reason to give up ability, for a show that may or may not work. :)
