Canada's Airlines Face a Privacy Dilemma on Saturday January 02, @03:43PM

Interoperable writes "Canada's airlines are caught between a rock and a hard place in the face of new US regulations that require them to collect and hand over personal information about passengers. Handing over information regarding a passenger's name, gender and birth-date may violate Canadian privacy laws but merely flying over American airspace is conditional on doing exactly that. It seems that the long arms of the TSA are eager to grope at Canadians taking a shortcut to Toronto; no doubt to prevent any terrorist attacks on Lake Huron."

I'd rather fly an extra 30 minutes than have to surrender that data just because the plane everflies a bit of the US.

But an extra 30 minutes will cost tens of thousands in fuel....

I hope the flight patterns are changed so that Canadians don't have to enter US airspace and force the US to change ours so we didn't have to enter theirs. It would send a strong message to the US government.

Canada needs to issue the same demands for data as the US insists on, remind Washington that Canada is a separate nation.

I personally would like for Americans to be treated the same in European airports as we are treated when entering the US: Long lines and wait times, fingerprinting, making mug shots, handing over of private data, and a full security workover for anyone who makes a fuss or 'looks the wrong sort'.

There are enough US bound flights that must overfly Canada to make a difference. Detroit would be interesting. Because of usual wind paterns, most flights land facing West. The only way to do that in Detroit is over Canada.

Sadly, I see the US becoming an overly insular, paranoid country.

And the airlines will raise the cost of tickets, and the resentment of the US will grow a little bit more, even in the US's greatest friend and trading partner.

Heh... how about we just spend TRILLIONS of dollars building a wall 20K feet high to keep folks OUT... this would be far better than having jet fighters escorting along side civilian flights now wouldn't it?

Can you imagine? Shaved naked bodies and X-ray machines just in case. Separate jets for luggage. Everyone will have their eyes temporarily disabled with some sort of electromagnetic pulse for privacy and security. And then John Wayne will ride in with a whip and lasso to herd us all off the plane.

I travel to the States three or four times a week. Its their country, ya gotta follow their rules if you want in.

The people who run terrorist groups are fanatics, but they're not stupid. I don't understand why still attempt an airplane bomb? They're are many, many other options where you can cause huge causulties.

But this one is not about wanting in. It's about surrendering my personnal information to a foreign government when I fly from Toronto to Vancouver, because at some point I'm 35,000 feet over the US.

I agree with you, I think its a knee jerk reaction that will solve nothing, except serious issues with extra territorality, something we as Canadians have tolerated for decades. BUT you are in the USA, you're 35 000 feet up, but you are still in US airspace and as such they can do as they wish.

Or we can change our routes and tell them to do the same. It will wreck havoc in air control. Can you imagine the chaos at Detroit International if they can't begin their approach over Canada?

It's just a stupid useless request and I hope our government does not approve it.

Require the same information from US flights over Canadian air space.
Demand DNA samples from all crew on all flights.
Ask for a stool sample.

:)
