Attitude: n
1: a complex mental orientation involving beliefs and feelings and values and dispositions to act in certain ways.

2: position or arrangement of the body and its limbs.

3: a theatrical pose created for effect.

4: position of aircraft or spacecraft relative to a frame of reference (the horizon or direction of motion)

Of course I had to be the one to get smart with the dictionary definition. What exactly are you looking for in the definition of attitude? As the first definition states, attitude is a very complex mental orientation that will cause it to be difficult to define.

Attitude is very important to the martial artist. More often than not it will be your attitude that determines the outcome of the fight rather than your skill. I see many instructors that teach their students how to be very good victims by teaching them to go on the defensive. If your attitude is that of a victim then you will wind up being the victim whether you win or not. If your attitude is one of defiance and aggression or even acceptance you will not be victimized.

Attitude means so much, think about it. There are people out there that love to get beat on and bloodied. To get beat turns them on. They are not victims even though they are being beat up. Yet others feel like victims if you happen to bump their shoulder in passing. Why? Attitude.

It's whatever you make it.

Good, bad, whatever. It is the outward manifestation of what you are feeling inside. It's the face you put on your character.

At least, that's *one* definition......:D

Your mileage may vary.

Peace--
