Finally a group of religious moderates standing up and speaking out against insanity.

What’s that saying? “All that is necessary for evil to prosper is for good men to do nothing.”

A group of Canadian and U.S. Islamic leaders on Friday issued a fatwa, or religious edict, declaring that an attack by extremists on the two countries would constitute an attack on the 10 million Muslims living in North America.

The 20 imams associated with the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada said this marked the first fatwa by the Muslim clergy declaring attacks on Canada and the U.S. to be attacks on Muslims.

"In our view, these attacks are evil, and Islam requires Muslims to stand up against this evil," the imams said in their fatwa.

Calgary Imam Syed Soharwardy, founder of the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada, said attacks on Canadian or U.S. soil are essentially attacks on Muslims.

There have been others that have done the same. Dr. Imam Talal Eid of the Islamic Institute of Boston has been a prominent voice of peace and tolerance. He was invited to the White House in the last 5 years by President Bush, and has reached out to many in Boston's Jewish community in hopes of finding ways to move the respective communities forward in harmony. He has issued fatwas against terrorism in the media, and his doctoral thesis at Harvard Divinity School was on the challenges of divorce (incl. remarriage, child custody, etc.) on American Muslims.

There are a number of folks like him, and like the group in Canada. Sadly they do not always get the attention they deserve...I hope that changes. :)
