SCRANTON, Pa. – If his diary and witness accounts are to be believed, Nicholas Pinto endured months of physical, sexual and mental abuse in prison. Guards roughed him up, made him stand naked in a cold cell for hours at a time, and taunted him relentlessly. A fellow inmate raped him night after night, beat him when he resisted, and stole his possessions.
And no one, he claimed, did a thing about it.
"The overall treatment I have received from both the prison and (the prison's) medical providers (is) unconstitutional, insufficient, cruel, inhumane and shamefully unacceptable," Pinto wrote in April.
He feared for his life, yet the officials responsible for his safety appear to have ignored his pleas for help — nor did they heed a warning from the prison chaplain that Pinto was in grave danger.

Thoughts?

I was surprised to see this was in PA. At first read I thought I was reading about the Orleans County prison system where the guards think it's ok to force inmates to push their tackle through the bars and stomp on it.

Many people have children, prisoners and guards alike. With that said, we all know the vulnerability of innocent young kids. It takes a very sick mind to take advantage of them. There are some people that take these actions of a sick mind to heart and act upon them in sometimes violent ways. LEO and prison guards are sworn to up hold the laws and protect even the guilty. There were a lot of mistakes made here, the biggest one done by this child pornographer when he decided to give into his sick cravings. Omar B hit the nail on the head.

I read a statistic that said that a large percentage of prison inmates were molested as children. I don't condone vigilante justice and I think the prison system needs to do what they can to prevent this sort of thing, but you know, if you're going to commit a particular crime you might want to stop to consider whether you're likely to be placed in a cell with someone who was a victim of that particular crime. Just sayin'.

Prison abuse is tacitly condoned and accepted by most of the population of the US. Prison rape between male inmates is a common joke punchline. Prison rape by guards and by female inmates is also common, but not joked with at least. We rely on prison rape and abuse to give the extra punishment we feel all criminals deserve. However, we don't have the guts to do it ourselves, we rely on the other prisoners to do it for us, then pat ourselves on the back on how much better we are then those criminal animals.

We are cowards. If we feel that criminals deserve constant beatings and rape, then at least have the guts to stand up and say so. Don't pat yourself on the back on how much more enlightened our system is than, say, Saudi Arabia, then accept and joke about abuse of prisoners.

It's self-deceptive, and it's cowardly.

Oh, and for our great lovers and defenders of the Constitution:

5th amendment: "...nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law..."
8th amendment: "...nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted."

Was the crime committed by an agent of the government acting within the sphere of his duties? No...

Many such crimes are committed by prison guards, although not this particular crime.

More broadly, having the means to stop a crime and choosing not to act, by both the public and the government, does impart moral culpability. Maybe not so much as the ones committing the acts, but culpability all the same.

Sounds to me, like this prison is a bit out of control. Its a no-brainer that anyone who harms children are on the 'hit list' in prison. Were members of the Gen. Pop. intentionally let into an area where this guy was? No idea, but anythings possible I suppose. And I'm sure that the guards may've harassed this guy, for lack of better words. Wrong as it may be, it does happen, and is fairly easy to do.

Moral of the story...if you're a sick **** and find it fascinating to moelst kids, get involved with child porn, and sick things of that nature, be prepared for the consequences.
