Am I caring about others too much?

Back in the day this would never happen. No athletic guy would come in and dominate blue belts or be even with purple belts. However, we have seen in my opinion an erosion of the quality of the belt levels in recent years in BJJ particularly at the lower levels. This is what happens when more...

How Fast Bruce Lee Progressed In The Martial Arts

I think we all have to look at the stories surrounding Bruce Lee with skepticism. Just like we would any other person. We also need to take into account what someone telling the story gains as well by having trained with Bruce Lee. Was he good? Was he great? Was he just okay? All we know...

    Would this work?

Okay, this as Tony say's is a pretty low percentage move but it does work. Personally being in law enforcement I do not like anything where I am on my back for a finishing technique and if someone was really adrenalized or on drugs I am pretty sure they would just continue on and that is why I...

What is a BJJ belt test like?

I never tested in BJJ. I was simply rolling and holding my own or beating an upper rank and then they gave me a belt. For instance, one time I was rolling with two pro fighters back to back and holding my own with one and beating the other and they gave me a belt afterwards.

    Asking Sensei to be paid?

This is one of the on going problems with many commercial martial arts schools where an instructor literally stops teaching his higher belts and relies on them to teach his classes more and more. It is a shame but many times the instructor has nothing left to teach the advanced student!

    Recording yourself teaching

I record all of the seminars I do and some special classes as well. I utilize multiple video cameras and a boom mike that captures audio really well. Recording yourself is eye opening and can really help you improve your teaching skills!

    Shooting stance

I'm a Firearms Instructor and also a Law Enforcement Firearms instructor for my departments academy. When I am running the range and people already come with training I do not try to adjust their stance but instead work on the other fundamentals such as grip, sight alignment, sight picture...

    Thoughts on Attending a Seminar?

Like Tony and other's I really enjoy attending seminar's. I love seeing how other people move, their interpretation of their Martial Science and the general comradery of other martial practitioner's. I love teaching them as well and passing along the skills I have learned throughout the years...

    Kettebells for strength

Of course starting with a sensible weight is the normal and smart thing to do as well as the recommended way by everyone. Yet, kettlebell movement as you move up in weight due to the nature of the movement of a round weight will place some stress on your wrist even though you are of course...
