Part of the reason I started this thread is because my son is in this situation 17 year old 3rd Dan promotable to 4th Dan in 7 months. His Master a 7th Dan is saying that he is going to promote him to 4th Dan when he turns 18! He told me this about 6 months ago! I was skeptical...I also see it...
Sport....but also our school is in a very economically challenged area so we work with a lot of kids in challenging circumstances...our school gives them a place to go...and keeps them out of trouble and focused on positive things!!! Very rewarding...
The 18 year old 4th Dan should be exceptional and rare and they would normally been judged ready by a GM in most cases...most likely they will have 10-14 years experience and will have already shown a level of dedication that would suggest a life long passion for the martial arts. It is a bit...
I don't think that she meant it in the beat down since...I don't think she meant beat up literally! If he beat him up literally why didn't the older and more mature Master Instructor stop it and educate the 11 year old! My 17 year old 3rd Dan would have!
i agree with you though if you are...
In 1960 our original GM was promoted 1st Poom/Dan....he was a member of Song Moo Kwan under the legendary GM Yong Sup Lee...he was 8 years old! He started training at 5....clearly they had no problem with youth BB!
Not really talking about test requirements! Should have been more clear!
Technical Mastery eshould be there of course!
What would you be looking for that would make you say.... That kid is a good 4th Dan inspite of his youth!
Our current Master is Changmookwan....we talked about the Kung Fu roots of that Kwan over dinner....I like the fact that the two different styles have helped diversify our game! We had never talked about his original Kwan...this conversation spurred me to ask! A lot of the differences make...
Who are the 30 year olds of which you speak....if you feel comfortable revealing their names? It is a great success story and debunks the whole 18 is to young theory being applied without consideration for the exceptional youth Martial Artist!
We are Song Moo Kwan which is difinitly derivative of Shotokan Karate and highly influenced by Funakoshi Sensei... Byung Jick Ro's ( founder of Song Moo Kwan) curriculum which he enforced was almost the carbon copy of the Shotokan curriculum of which I am very familiar.
Correct me if I am wrong...
just trying in got get another discussion going! How long do you think someone should train before 4th Dan.... Is age the only requirement....what if someone is exceptional!
i agree that it is organizational centric!
Gichin Funakoshi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Funakoshi Sensei was the original Martial Arts teacher of many of the Korean Kwan founders!
Do we have TKD without Funakoshi?
Sorry for the misspelling in the title!
Article 8...minimum requirements from a an age and time in grade standard!
"World Culture Taekwondo! Kukkiwon will make it"
They changed the 5th Dan from Poom minimum age requirement to 22 years old....remember these are minimum requirements!
This is likely to be a controversial topic!
I know the minimum requirements for 4th Dan...a few 18 year olds do qualify based on when they got their 3rd Poom!
Do you think any 18 year old qualifies?
What should an 18 year old 4th Dan look like from a qualification and skill perspective?
Master Dan/Manny etc....What you describe would be another sport. It would be completely different than what the sport has become since the Olympic movement! The electronic hogu and head gear insure a level playing field along with video replay in today's environment. The sport has improved...
