I've seen many kids carry their keys on them, and simply place it in their pocket with the lanyard hang'n out. Sometimes a product is what it is....takes the human brain to sort out what they can be utilized for other than its original design ;)
for practicality...stick and/or knife, absent firearms
for the traditional kobudo weapons...nunchuk, bo, sai because these are the ones I've had the most exposure to.
for the unique because I think they are cool and my buddy made it for me......the lei o mano club :)
If they are cloth, try washing them to soften up the elastic part. Either that, or the size may be a bit small for them. I've only really used the cloth shin guards, and at first do fit snug then over time loosen up. However, it could also be the quality of the material itself.
I'm sure you can still find them around. How about just starting local and getting you feet wet so to speak, just as you are doing with your return to training. Many open tourneys have specific categories anyhow that you can enter not only at your rank leve, but your choice of staying more...
Not sure what your instructor would do, but I know what I would do, and that would be glad to have you back at training first and foremost, and then worry about the lil stuff like paying later ;)
It is a long time debate on whether to charge someone for MA training if you are an instructor that trains outta their garage for example. My buddy who now owns his own commercial school setting did teach from his garage for many years. His p.o.v. is that you should always charge something...
I would lean towards cutting the cord as well, but without understanding your buddy's reasons for staying, perhaps he is bound by "tradition" than most others when it comes to the Martial Arts. You've stated that even he doesn't see himself as good businessman, that he is not "people"...
I can't recall having trained with many if any jerks during my years in MA. However, when someone walks into the dojo, and starts rattling off their rank, experience, or how something should be done after observing a class, then I know well enough not to take a chance in having that person...
That is how my old training pal started....out of his garage, and now he has his own dojo running for the past couple years!
Oh, and you da Man for having such supportive Wives!!;) I jest....I couldn't help myself :p
LOL!! When I was a young kyu rank, I didn't think I had to wash my white Ki gi, and one day I saw these black marks all over it.....I realized then that canvas could mold.....luckily I didn't wait to find out if I could turn that gi into a black one :p
I have never seen what my test scores were when I was moving up through the ranks. However, we would discuss the area(s) in which I need to work on a little bit more. Therefore, of the students I did promote, I would handle it the same way.
Who in the world would think to have anything in their gi?? In all the time I've trained, I never stuck anything in my gi top, except maybe my mouthpc. before sparring. I guess with the lil ones, the parents who dress their kids must be reminded of a lil thing called discipline!
I could only wish to be living back on an island!!! I vacation on Kauai as often as I can...one day I will move there or any other island there for that matter. Choose what you feel is best for you at the moment. Then just focus on that, and when the time comes, add to your tool box ;)
Ditto on mindset.....your willingness to survive a physical confrontation, and I don't think you necessarily have to be a "fighter" per say, as in a trained fighter.....just have a strong mind to know that you will/want to survive. Not every person that has ever been attacked or will be...
To quote Dr. Phil.....and I don't watch him on a regular basis....."some people just don't get it". So always good to have a back up plan if you can ;)
I've used several places over the years, and have wholesale accounts with companies like KWON and Tiger Claw. Depending on what I need at the time depends on who I go with, plus price will mostly be my bottom line as the quality run about the same for items like sparring gear.
