Ok, I'm not sure if you're posting seriously or just trying to troll. This thread is about the effectiveness of TKD as a fighting style. Not the effectiveness of X style against Wrestling or Jiujitsu. but I will humor you anyway. No, Kenpo is not setup primarily to deal with styles that...
yeah I can think of a few places it could work well but I only use for now until I increase my flexibility and do it the right way. Otherwise my son will never let me hear the end of it! Lol
I study both TKD and Kenpo and, in my humble opinion, most TKD is not very usable in the street due the fact that TKDs primary weapon is kicking and most fights I've been in and seen dont happen at that range. The combatants are not trained so they come in as fast as they can with their fists...
My primary experience is in Kenpo but I have recently been exposed to 2 different TKD dojos in the past 6 months, so my exposure to TKD is limited BUT in both dojos I was able to learn that my roundhouse kick needed A LOT of work because the best that I can do looks like the first kick in the...
The reason that I know it’s not a scam is because I studied up to green belt in a physical Tracy’s Kenpo so I know what to expect and in quite a few ways he’s actually a little more exacting on things than my original Sifu. But yeah, I hear ya otherwise. If u are a total beginner with 0...
so, in your opinion, if someone doesn’t have access to a brick and mortar school they should just give up? I don’t agree with that. There are way too many resources out there and, if someone has the ability to take it seriously, their thirst for knowledge and desire to get it right will...
Guys.. you are missing the point here. No one is arguing the fact that a physical school will always be the best way to learn a martial art. If a physical school is available then definitely, that is where you should go. But, as I pointed out a few posts ago, people who are inquiring about...
access to an instructor. If you don’t understand something You can take videos of yourself doing a move or just fire off questions to him and he gets back with you very quickly. And if that doesn’t do it, then once a week you can get together with him for live coaching to solve any issues...
I got up to by green belt in Kenpo before I had to stop. Of course, a physical school will always be the BEST option if it's available to you. I dont think I've ran across too many posts where someone had the option to use a physical school but was curious in using distance learning instead...
So I've been reading around on these and other forums looking for a good way for me to get back into Kenpo (specifically Tracy's Kenpo). I've read many of the posts from you guys on here about the reasons why distance learning for a martial art is not a good idea, and I agree with most, if not...
Haha! What a small world huh? What's the likelihood of that? I know where Lancaster is at, haven't been there though. And I will, I will stay true to what I was taught while going thru this. If I get lucky enough to find a teacher, if I'm not true to my old instructor's teachings, I'll end...
Na, that doesnt bother me at all, I live in Wisconsin Rapids. And yeah, even though my body's conditioning, balance and flexibility is not what it once was I still very clearly remember how everything looked and felt and I can still tell now if I make a movement if I'm doing it right or not...
Thanks for that info, I did a google search already for Tracy's in Minnesota but nothing came up. I completely agree with you on the sticking with local schools but in a relatively rural area, there are very few schools here and the ones that are here are TKD only. Not that I am against TKD...
Ok guys, here's my issue... 12 years ago, I was a Tracy's student in Silverton, Ohio... life happened and I had to stop training (was almost to brown) and then life happened again and I moved to Central Wisconsin. Now here I am, 12 years down the road and wanting to finish what I started. The...
Did you every figure out what was stopping you here? I get a very similar kind of pain when I try to throw round house kicks but I can barely get above my own knee. If you have increased your flexibility since the start of this thread, I'd love to hear what stretches you used.
Necro bump!!
I can say myself from being in Tracy's Kenpo a long time ago, they do have some exceptional training materials. I dont think any one of them by themselves would suffice but the videos combined with their technique bible can give you a very very good grasp on what is going on with...
Yes, I 100% am putting the blame on the sedentary lifestyle I had developed and this damn desk job. I had a lot of other small issues that had been plaguing me up until I made this change in my life (slight sciatica, shooting tendon pain, focus, mental clairity,etc...) Once I got back into...
Agreed, which is part of the whole treatment path. IF he can adjust it, without strengthening those muscles, it would just revert back, so it sounds like I'll be working on a lot of different things at once to try and get this where it needs to be for TKD. Thank god, since my insurance doesn't...
The Dr seems pretty confident that it's something that he can adjust and fix thank god and has told me to keep as active as possible, keep stretching and do warm Epsom salt soaks for 10 mins a day. I've got 3 adjustments a week for the next 3 weeks. Well see how things go!
So, update here.... got seen by the chiropractor last week. Seems that my hips have rotated so that they are not perfectly square anymore when viewed from the front and I have some degeneration in the sockets. Not horrible, but it's there. I am still stretching all the time and constantly on...
I guess it'll just depend on the kids. I'll have them try it both ways and let them decide, I ended up getting the gloves I linked below. Not too expensive but great reviews and ... bonus.. in their favorite colors! lol.
MMA Gloves - Pro MMA Gloves - Combat Sports
That's some good points... maybe I'm just trying to be too much of a parent and keep them from hurting themselves which might in turn make them shy away from using it. My 5 year old is a glove fanatic though, for him.. the gloves will only make him want to do it more! lol
Yup, they do make a kids version, though it seems the base is just a little lower and easier for shorter folk to hit the bag. The actual bag material seemed to be the same though. Either way, that's the one I got for them.
Kenpo is by far my favorite MA so far that i have been exposed to so I can certainly understand your desire to reclaim it. As others have said, if this is just for you, who cares what anyone else thinks besides yourself. Obviously, you care enough to want to get it right and practice things in...
I thought of that too, just some of those cotton gloves, cut the fingers off and they have something cool. Might be the way to go. Since they are youngins, they are motivated by getting to "play" with cool lookin stuff so I dont mind shellin out a little more if it makes them want to use it.
Hey guys, about to purchase a wavemaster for the family to punch and kick on and I want to get my kids some hand protection so they dont tear themselves up on it right away and not want to use it anymore. They are 4 (girl) and 5 (boy) so they have pretty small hands. Does anyone have any...
That kind of makes sense, the more material there is, the further it can be elongated. That's definitely not a view point that I've ever heard before. Either way though, strength training along with flexibility training just seems to go hand in hand IMO. I'd certainly want both.
