Punishment for misbehaving in class should be addressed with class management and personal engagement. If it is defiance then you need to get the parent involved and ask whether martial arts classes are right for this child at this time.
As a side note: Some of the claims MA schools make about...
Maybe in the early days, but now we have Skillet, Switchfoot, Thousand Foot Krutch, Hawk Nelson...
These are legitimate mainstream bands.
Sorry for the highjack, but wanted to give a shout out to the good Christian Rock out there, It has been a blessing to a parent of teenagers.
Grace and...
I am a pastor and BB TKD. I teach a weekly fitness and martial arts class for men and women at my church. At this point they are separate just because they started separate but will probably combine into something a little more structured and formal where they advance through a curriculum. So...
So, I recently worked out at a school who uses wood flooring. I got a wicked blister on my foot (ball of big tow). It has been over a week but it is still sensitive to touch and is affecting my workouts. Anyone have a remedy for this? Bandages just keep coming off. Super Glue? Or better yet, New...
What floor space do you have and how many students does that accommodate? What would you say is the minimum sq ft. per adult male for basic curriculum: Patterns, Drills, Light Sparring, etc.
The class has been a great success so far. We had 11 the first week and 15 the second week. These are all men who would never have signed up for an exercise class, much less a martial arts class. I have a very diverse group from teens to seniors, those in some shape to the completely out of...
WOW, I stopped reading after the first page. That letter is embarrassing. That has got to be the worst grammar and sentence structure I have ever read from someone leading a national organization. The first paragraph is one long run-on sentence.
In light of the gender conversation we have had in this post, it is interesting to note that several ladies have asked about joining us, mainly those who are doing the ladies exercise class. We'll see where that goes. If there is enough interest I may actually start some kind of club.
Well, tonight is our first night. I can't believe how many have expressed interest. I have everyone from teenagers to some elders coming. I'll update you tomorrow on how it goes.
As a side note, if you were doing something like this, what might you spend the hour doing? I know some are...
This is correct. Actually, most of what we'll be doing in regards to self-defense, I'm actually getting other places than my traditional taekwondo training. It would be great if this generated some interest in the school where I attend, but that would just be serendipitous and not the purpose of...
Actually, churches are classified as charities and do not pay taxes in the UK. And actually, yes, in the UK you can start whatever private club you want. But, actually, I'm not sure why you are taking the thread down this road. Please refer back to my original post. Thanks.
Actually, it being an activity as part of a church ministry is what makes it less complicated. Being in ministry and following case law for religious non-prophets for a while now, I can tell you the legal system is very friendly to churches. The system doesn't get involved, and when they do...
This is really the context. The purpose of the class is the former. If I were to offer a self defense class as a community service held in our church, it would certainly be open to anyone.
Thanks for your comments.
Thanks. Any way I can connect the areas of my life that matter most is a good thing. My four kids also participate withe me. We did a little demonstration for the kid's Sunday school class this week. We take a virtue approach to education and this month is discipline. She asked us to come in and...
I think you are really misunderstanding the context.
First, I am not trying to merely start a martial arts class. I'm trying to utilize martial arts as a way of drawing some guys together to build relationships among a demographic that doesn't get a lot of this. Second, I think it is very...
The point is not so much to start a martial arts club, per se. I have thought about that. If I were to do this, I would merely use the church space but it would be its own entity, and of course all would be invited. I'm not sure I am ready for that, though I would like to get to that point soon...
Just received my BB in Taekwondo and passed my first level instructor test (there are three in our curriculum). I am a pastor and am looking for ways to start teaching. We have a school and offer aftercare at our church, so I'm going to start a class for our aftercare program.
I have also been...
You like schools to open up near you to challenge you for income? Really?
And this bothers you because? Oh, because you like competition. And, this means that this guy isn't going to steal as many new students from you.
Again, why mock him for this?
I'm sorry but this is complete BS...
Man, I miss the WWoS. That was so much fun. I just wikied it and found this interesting tidbit. It seems it was actually the ground breaker for many staple televised sporting events:
"Wide World of Sports was the first program to air coverage of Wimbledon, The Indianapolis 500, the NCAA Men's...
I think people make too much out of what impression Olympic TKD gives to Martial Arts. Quite frankly, I don't think most people even notice Olympic TKD. It wasn't on TV, and what was streamed live online was in the middle of the night. I doubt clubs are losing members because of Olympic...
Went to a camp my instructor's master put on and I asked him for some help. He told me to retract my kick in the air rather than leaving it out there and that would help stop the rotation. That made all the difference. It also helped me land right into the back stance.
When doing this kick on a target I seem to land it. When doing it in the air in a pattern I seem to over rotate and land off center. In the pattern I'm doing I am in a back stance and need to execute a jump spinning side with my front foot to my backside and land in a back stance double...
I most certainly mean "A." And by "market," I don't necessarily mean the "profit-at-the-expense-of-the art" degradation of martial arts. What I mean is the culture of store front martial arts that all of us (with the exception of a few) participate in. My point is that in this culture a black...
A black belt in the academy I attend means you have gone through the curriculum and have demonstrated an ability to perform it to your own level.
This seems to be where the market is now and it isn't going back. It seems that the logical next step in the evolution of belt advancement is to...
This is a stunning statement. Since I can't think of anyone who wouldn't strike with nasty intent if their life was on the line, I assume you mean someone who is predisposed to this "mental state." Sounds like a thug to me. Moreover, I find it the highest of virtues of a black belt to shy away...
This sounds like a mirroring problem. Most kids will naturally turn toward their instructor rather than away from him/her. You may need to switch sides so the kids have an easier time mirroring.
