Using videos to supplement what you learn in class?

In TKD I used videos to remind me of certain movements in the poomsae I was currently learning when I forgot them but just as a supplement to class. In BJJ I use videos to remind me of certain movements I might have forgotten after class but I also sometimes look for a few new things to try and...

Any advantages to having a Karate, Kung Fu etc. background for BJJ beginners.

As far as techniques go, no. As far as being relaxed while training, maybe. I trained TKD before BJJ and I had to learn to relax in TKD and relearn it with BJJ....different contexts I presume. If you have decent conditioning due to your prior MA training that will help....of course that could...

How much training/hours/classes per week is optimal?

Our classes are one hour. Most folks show up early and get 20-30 min of rolling in before class starts. Warm up really depends on the instructor, some are more focused on conditioning than others. After class it's open mat if you have not had enough yet. I usually manage to go twice a week for...

    Question for the Judo folks

I have been going down a Judo rabbit hole this weekend and watched some high level comp highlights from 2016/2017. The throwing I saw was absolutely phenomenal ( I did Judo ages ago) but I had a question about some of the fairly rare ground work stuff. Knowing that it was only highlights that I...

    Bennefits of studying Judo?

Well you learn grappling in stand up and on the ground, the latter not as much as BJJ but still useful. The benefits depend on what you want to learn.

Got completely manhandled by a female blue belt 60-70 pounds lighter than me during last night's rolling....it was awesome. I told her that I so wish that my daughter will stick with BJJ. Her answer was: " yeah, my Dad doesn't worry about me"

isit ok for an adults and kids to wear their gi and Belt at the store

Dang it, now I feel bad. I wear a rash guard under my Gi because I sweat a lot and it seems to keep me from dripping onto my partners more than nothing or a T-shirt. I generally go straight home after training but there have been times when I dropped into a store to pick something up real...

TKD is Weak on the street as a self defense?

You're right, not the art but if the style/dojang doesn't teach the 'right' way, the SD is going to have some really big gaps (see my earlier post above)

    Weight difference causing problems

@Tony Dismukes' post was fantastic. What has worked for me to get over frustration (to an extent at least) is to focus on the positive things. Yeah I eventually got tapped, but before that I did manage a sweep and got in side control or I almost had that choke, or I lasted three times as long as...

TKD is Weak on the street as a self defense?

Based on my own experiences I would say it really depends on how your TKD school trains. The school I attended, we did olympic style sparring and compliant self defense techniques (joint locks etc). We did not spend a lot of time working on punches. So I would say we did not train in a way that...
