    Question for the Judo folks

I have been going down a Judo rabbit hole this weekend and watched some high level comp highlights from 2016/2017. The throwing I saw was absolutely phenomenal ( I did Judo ages ago) but I had a question about some of the fairly rare ground work stuff. Knowing that it was only highlights that I...

About 3 months in....ruminations about my BJJ experience

So, as the title says, I thought it would be fun to post about a few things I have learned in this new endeavor of mine. I'm sure some of this is not exactly new and quite a few folks will have read or experienced similar things. Still I thought it might be fun to share my personal experience...

Funny when your previous training kicks in involuntarily.....

In last night's Jiu Jitsu class we were training to catch a round kick and then drop the kicker with O Uchi Gari. At least five or six times, instead of catching his kick I automatically kicked him right back.......ye olde TKD creeping in....we got some good giggles out of it....:)

    Some reflections and decisions.........brain dump......

I started training TKD with my son at a Kukki school a bit more than 3 years ago. The kid was done after that time and I tried to keep it up but am having schedule difficulties and issues with my expectations and the reality of TKD in our school (TKD as a whole?). Sparring is fun but there is...

Anyone familiar with Grandmaster Sun Yi and his Trad. TKD Association

From what I have found there is only one school in my area that teaches "Trad TKD", Chang Hon forms etc. and that is part of Sun Yi's organization. From what little I could find out it seems that grandmaster Yi's TKD originates from Chung Do Kwan but if anyone has any experience with the...

    Bruises behaving strangely

I'll preface this by saying that I will be more than happy to consult my doc if this is indeed strange but I wanted to draw on other folks' experience first. The last two sparring sessions ( one three weeks ago, the other one week ago) I clashed shins pretty hard with my partners. Both times...

    BJJ purple belt running school?

Hi everyone, overheard some guys at the Y talking about BJJ, so I asked them about where they train. Told me about a school nearby. The school is run by a purple belt under Caio Terra. He's been training in BJJ for 11 years which sounds plenty. I was just wondering whether a purple belt running...

What else do you guys do for fun?

I know there are two old threads around where people talk about their other hobbies but a lot of the posters on there do not seem to be active anymore, so I thought I would start a new one. Beside MA I like cooking and playing music (banjo, guitar, cigarbox guitar, fiddle (badly) and just...

    R.A.D. Rape agression defense classes?

Just got an email from the college I teach at, that the University police dept is offering RAD classes for women. Form what I understand it's a 9h minimum, redman suit type of thing. Just out of curiosity: does anyone have experience with that program and does it offer anything useful and realistic?

Anyone been enjoying the Judo matches in Rio?

Usually don't watch sports at all but I make exception for big events, plus, streaming allows us to see events not covered by the regular TV coverage (in the US). I have really been enjoying the Judo comps so far, albeit with some strange rules and thusly strange disqualifications. Also really...

    Pregnant Yak-TKD take 2

I posted a vid of yours truly hitting a bag a couple of weeks ago and got some very good constructive criticism. Some things mentioned were keeping my arms more under control when kicking, avoiding the chicken wing and chambering kicks better. I have been trying to work on those three issues...

    Pregnant Yak tries TKD........

Alrighty, this is the first time I videoed myself training.....ugh Bit of background: Started TKD at 43 with my kid, have been at it for a bit more than 2 years. We usually attend class twice a week and I slip in a sparring class whenever I can. I have some perpetual trouble with my left knee...

    I may be at a crossroads....input appreciated

So the kids (5 and 8) and I have been training TKD for about 18 months now. Fun was had, progress has been made, belts have been earned etc. Daughter also started gymnastics and is really enjoying that while her passion for TKD has fizzled (to put it in a nice way). Also three nights of...

    School recommendations in Raleigh, NC

I have become interested in trying out some internal arts like Bagua or XingYi. I found two or three schools in the Raleigh Durham area that look decent but I wanted to see if anyone here could recommend a place. I am definitely interested in the martial side of things. Thanks a bunch F

    Conditioning rant

I am feeling very frustrated about how winded and tired I got during last night's sparring class. I exercise a lot, incorporate HIIT, bag work etc. I don't get why sparring wears me out so much. I am pretty new at it and still pretty tense which probably plays a large part but it's a bit...

How open is your instructor to suggestions?

About nine months ago I was looking for a MA school for my kids. I did quite a bit of research and quickly realized that the area is overrun with McDojos. I finally found a small TKD dojang that was more what I was looking for: no contracts, people don't test until they know their stuff and will...

    Hi from North Carolina

Hello everyone, i have been lurking for a couple of weeks and finally decided to join. About nine months ago I wanted to get my five year old son to get out of his " stick-in-the-mudness" and had him try out TKD. He liked it, talked about it at home and his 7 yr old sis decided she wanted to...
