My friend (the one I've been sparring against) has around 4 months of experience (so a bit more).

Try observing their movement and anticipate their strikes before they actually hit you. After a while, you start noticing their habits and then you will eventually start dodging their strikes and getting more time to strike back. This helped me a lot
Probably because the bank was founded in Canada I guess? Or because the Americans said that all Canadians were a threat to American society so to prevent contact between America and Canada this rule was created? I don't know, just throwing wild guesses.
