    Intrested in bokken arts/kendo

The old classical arts of Japanese swordsmanship are so deep and sophisticated that it has to be learned under a certified or qualified sensei. Even training under a sensei's supervision and guidance, it is still difficult to aquire and grasp the subtleties involved. It's already difficult...

Is there a Kenjutsu dojo in Chico CA?

If you really want the formal instruction, you will find a way to get it. Some travel great distances to train a JSA. Few people are lucky to be living in the area where there is legitimate JSA training. Good luck.

Noto - a queastion on details

Howard, During our noto, the mune is just riding over the koiguchi. The blade is edge up the whole time. Because we aren't feeling the blade with our fingers or skin, one develops a sensitivity to the blade's relation to the saya during the sliding of the mune on the koiguchi til the tip...

Noto - a queastion on details

This is how we noto. My sensei noto several times here. Also note that for our ryu, Nami Ryu Aiki Heiho, we avoid finger and skin contact with the blade during noto. It takes quite a bit of practice to get this down. Despite it looks simple, there is alot of subtlety involved. This...

What is your preference in length of a Katana's Tsuka (handle)?

In my style Nami Ryu, long tsuka is used for tactical advantage. My tsuka length is 14 inches. I do use a 13 inch tsuka but won't use any tsuka shorter than that. I can manage a 15 inch tsuka but it is pushing the limits for me. Please note I am only 5'7". My choice for tsuka length are...

    Wearing of a wakazashi/katana

A tasuki as I understand it is any cord that can tie up kimono sleeves and is not specificly a type of a material. If sageo is convienant, then a sageo is used. Some people use rope or nylon cord or even a long enough shoe lace for tasuki. I believe Toby Threadgill Sensei of Takamura ha Shindo...

    Nami Ryu demo video

Cutting the mats gets smudge and gunk on the blade. So before returning the blade into it's saya or scabbard, the blade is wiped each time before noto or sheathing. Wiping that way with a towel doesn't necessarily get all of it off the blade, but it gets some off because we want to put as...
