So when did grappling get involved?

Well, what were the beimo official rules then? PS: Yes, I post regularly at bullshido. I am a bullshidoka at heart. Yes, that does explain a lot.

So when did grappling get involved?

Look, I do not judge all beimos from what I saw. But what I saw was horrible, and it demonstrates two things. 1) Some people which participated in those beimos sucked. Period. So a beimo cannot be compared to Pride, because to get in Pride you must be about 10,000 times better than those two...

So when did grappling get involved?

Dude, the only public video of a beimo challenge (which you posted here) demonstrates that at least some of those guys SUCKED. Period. What makes you think there were good fighters there? What PROOF do you have? Until someone proves me otherwise, I織ll keep believing that those beimo fighters...

So when did grappling get involved?

As far as I know, Vitor Belfort is first and foremost a boxer, right?

So when did grappling get involved?

Excellent post Mr. Andrew. When I used to do Lee Shing lineage Wing Chun, we did have a few joint locks and throws, but quite frankly, nothing to write home about. And NO groundfighting to speak of.

    Which Wing Chun?

I never heard of challenges between BJJ guys and judo guys here. I did judo about 10 years ago, I now do only Muay Thai: but I do know judo guys sometimes compete in BJJ championships, and BJJ guys sometimes compete in judo championships. And yes, it does seem like brazilians ar starting to...

    Which Wing Chun?

Actually you were not clear at all. This is what you said. "WingChun Lawyer - what is the law with regards to personal space? do you know? are you really a lawyer?" Well, I already stated that yes, I am a brazilian lawyer. I never heard about "the law with regards to personal space", there...

    Which Wing Chun?

Yes, I am a brazilian lawyer. No, I have no idea on what you are trying to talk about here. If you have an issue with me, at least extend me the courtesy of being somewhat clear.

    Which Wing Chun?

So, could you describe your classes? And did you see any sparring?

    Help advice needed

I did Muay Thai and Wing Chun at the same time. In my experience, doing two striking arts at once is a bad, bad idea. Just pick one and get good at it. Now, doing a GRAPPLING art along with a striking art, that織s a good idea.

    Anti-Grappling

Methinks an anti-striking program wouldn´t work so well, since grapplers are usually told by their coaches (in judo and BJJ classes, at least) that it´s a bloody good idea to go elsewhere to learn some boxing or kickboxing in order to supplement their games. But hey, who knows...

    Ever broken someone?

I believe this thread is necessary. It is important to know how our fellow martial artists have dealt with the injuries they cause and suffered, and what kind of injuries are common in our hobby. I can織t see how honestly trading relevant experiences can relate to a supposed "glorification of...

    Sifu Emin Boztepe

Do you know him personally? What are your impressions of him? Regarding the Gracie challenge, by now it is impossible to know with absolute certainty who said what, the internet is full of hearsay. But, AFAIK, the Gracies agreed to fight him in a police district and he refused, right?

    Anti-Grappling

    1) Agreed. 2) Neither did I. 3) It織s easy to do antigrappling once you know how to grapple... 4) HIS antigrappling may be effective...because HE knows how to grapple. 5) That織s true. 6) Punching is faster than throwing people to the ground. But one punch frequently will not stop a...

    Mental/Emotional Chi Sao

Confront her publically, but not aggressively. Wait for the right, time, preferably in front of your boss/bosses, then casually comment "actually I did this, you didn織t". Do the same thing in front of your work colleagues. Take the credit for your work, demand it. You don織t have to actually...

Have You Begun to Realize it May be Time to....

I still believe you should at least consider sparring a couple of rounds every month, if only to avoid forgetting the application of your stuff. ...I know, I know, he is a doctor and it is your life, but I can織t help but feel sorry when I see a dedicated martial artist who will have to stop...

Have You Begun to Realize it May be Time to....

Have you considered changing your sparring methods, rules and frequency? In your place I would talk to the doctor and ask about the actual causes of your problem, so that you know what are your actual limitations. I mean, "don織t spar" is a bit too generic, isn織t it? Sparring consists of a...

    holding the basics

My bad, I emptied my inbox. As far as I know, sparring in Wing Chun is no big deal. Just use your common sense and avoid eye pokes and groin strikes, and there you go. Certainly many reputable WC sifus agree with me on that (Emin Boztepe, Kevin Chan, Benny Meng). Did you read that thread? I...

    Ever broken someone?

Well, I almost broke a guy織s nose during a sparring match, but I am afraid that does not quite fit the definition of gorey - although, to be fair, there was an awful lot of blood involved.

Ok, now THAT answer was indeed very good Don. It seems you are addressing the knife vs poicket stick issue from a psychological point of view, one I had not addressed in my question. Nonetheless it is an interesting and relevant point of view to the discussion at hand. And, of course, and...

    holding the basics

Alright, I take back what I said. I did not use to think like you. I was never THAT naive. You obviously have no significant sparring experience, despite what you say here. You certainly never went at it with someone significantly bigger or stronger than you - I mean, you believe you can...

    holding the basics

Incidentally, and as a peace offering, check out the following link. On this thread I described my experiences while I started crosstraining in Muay Thai (I had about 20 months of experience in Wing Chun when I started it). I hope this helps you understand where I am coming from. It took me...

    holding the basics

My WC experience was horrible, I admit that. But it seems I was not the only one with such an experience, and it also seems the kind of WC I was taught is sadly all too common. I used to think just like yipman_sifu, until I finally understood that it takes more than tan saos and straight...

    Leung Ting?

Oh lord. I can織t believe you still worship old Bruce. Let the poor man rest in peace! I am certainly not badmouthing Bruce. I am sure he was tha man back in the day, and he could probably kick both our asses combined. But you just can織t begin to compare a small man with outdated training with...

    holding the basics

I do believe there is a lot of nonsense, hearsay and outright lies in the WC community. I also believe that many WC lineages teach a flawed striking system instead of an efficient system, ignoring certain moves and strategies commonly used in other arts (namely circular strikes, jabs and...

    Leung Ting?

Hm, let織s see. Bruce was much lighter and smaller than those guys. Bruce織s grappling experience could not be compared to those guys. AFAIK he only had a bit of judo practice with Gene Lebell - and he got his *** handed to him by old Lebell (not that that is embarassing, Gene is a god of...

I asked him to answer my question, considering no predetermined legal restriction is placed on carrying or using a knife. I live in Brazil, and the law here allows me to carry any blade under 10 centimeters, and to use it as I see fit in legitimate defense of myself or of others. I have no...
