    From Okinawa to Korea

I’m guessing it’s a combination of not wanting to learn new stuff at the expense of the old stuff along with the inclination to think that the way you learned something originally is the best or “right” way. During the decade I lived and taught in Korea, several times we had visitors from North...

    From Okinawa to Korea

IMO for those who chose to stay with what they knew it was more about sticking with what they learned - not having to learn new stuff as opposed to "Not Liking" something they would only have passing familiarity with. Therein was part of the Geniuss of KKW TKD . accepting all systems and...

    From Okinawa to Korea

I know its been a min since Ive been in here but....Im back! ;) Ive read a few post in this form but not all and Im sure all have already said why and how TKD is connected to karate. But this one caught my attention because of the SHUDOKAN. My instructor, Ki Whang Kim, trained under Toyama...

How did it take to get a black belt under Gichin Funakoshi?

I know he got his certificate of Hanshi (?) meaning he had the right to teach, from Itosu. There had to be a Dan system by the 1940's because Im always seeing ppl saying that they were promoted by Funakoshi to "this level". Im just curious to how long did they train before they were handed...

How did it take to get a black belt under Gichin Funakoshi?

Im curious about this. Back in the old days like the 1930's & 40's. And did they do the 2yrs to get 2nd Dan, 3yrs to get 3rd Dan, 4yrs to get 4th Dan....etc?

Ask Me Absolutely Anything About Korean Speaking and Phonics

Ok. I do have an old pic of my teacher in Korea back in the 50's with some writing in the back ground but every time I ask a Korean to translate it they say its old Korean and they cant read it. :)

Ask Me Absolutely Anything About Korean Speaking and Phonics

Its the blank part I need to know tho. LOL! So did the Korean people migrated from China and did they speak Chinese or was it Chinese writing with Korean pronunciation and thats why they stopped using Chinese characters?

Can you read old Korean? I would like to know what this says especially the parts (besides the name and date) that were hand written in. Thanks

    Certification from orgs like Kukkiwon

He was my teacher. I grew up around him. My dad would take me over his house some Sat and I would watch Kung-fu movies while they would talk. All of us that trained under him refer to him as Ki Whang or Whang Ki when we're taking about him. It's an habit that I got from my senior classmates and...

    Certification from orgs like Kukkiwon

l know Im being bias here but I think your best bet is the Ki Whang Kim Traditional Martial Arts Association (Ki Whang Kim Traditional Martial Arts Association (KWK-TMAA)). :-) Ki Whang's name and Albert Cheeks signature still weighs heavy in Korea (if thats what you care about). I got a lot...

The change of fraternity in Taekwondo

Nice subject. Ive seen that recently on ppls websites. Stating that they have a MA degree from a university over in Korea. IDK.....for me I like the kwan systems. As you may have noticed from some of my other post Im anti-Kukkiwon. LOL! For me the kwans had their own ways of approach...

    Choong-Moo Hyung

Isnt this a question you should be asking your instructor? I think you would get a better answer from the person who is teaching because its gonna come down to what they expect from you.

    American TKD Grandmasters List

Oh ok...well I dont know. I never cared about getting a certificate from the KKW. There a lot ppl that do that here in the States. The US Chung Do Kwan Association is one and I always see ads for ppl to teach saying you dont have to be a black belt. But Ive met ppl that were given classes...

    American TKD Grandmasters List

Yes. To me thats just a scam to make money. You pay the amount of whatever level you're testing for. So 6th Dan is $600. This is what Ive been told. And then you have some Koreans here in the States scaming ppl just to make money. I was talking to someone the other day about the KKW and...

Oh Lord, where to start with Aikido?

I grew up in TKD and we had Aikido techniques that were part of the curriculum. I would say go with Yoshikan Aikido but Im bias because my teacher trained with Gozo Shioda. ;) But go check out both places as Jenna said above and see which one you like.

    Certification in Multiple Organziations

I trained with Saotome in Aikido and he told me that I was a white belt in his system but that doesnt that my skills are null and void. But they excepted me as a black belt and recognized me as a black belt even though I was at a white belt level. I didnt walk around with a chip on my shoulder...

    Certification in Multiple Organziations

Nah.....I was taught it don't work like that. I've trained in Kung Fu and Aikido and none of them asked me to wear a white belt. They excepted me as I am. I don't do Olympic TKD. So everytime a BJJ person tries to take me dwn the **** don't work. I tell BJJ ppl all the time that I don't have to...

    Certification in Multiple Organziations

Thats how it should be. If a person walks in with a BB from somewhere else you say ok no problem you just have to learn the curriculum. I guess thats why I never took a BJJ class. Cause they want you to start as a white belt and I always say no. LOL!

    American TKD Grandmasters List

Ok I understand. Like I said I already know how USCDKA works and what it takes for yall to get a certificate from Master Uhm. I just dont agree with that process. My teacher was Ki Whang Kim and he didnt believe in promoting ppl that he didnt train. So thats where my thinking comes from...
