what to fill wall bag with?

I've heard of a few different things but not sure what would be the best? I'm still a beginner with just 1 year experience and this will be on my garage wall via some plywood. It is a 3-section bag. I've heard: tossed sand grain (aquarium tank type), mung beans, rice or plastic beads. Any...

    wing chun long pole

hmm.. perhaps I've been going about this the wrong way? With my current sifu, he doesn't let us train with the wooden dummy or long pole until we've already had 4+ years of training with him under our belt. I've only been with him for 1 year. The only reason I'd have of finding and buying a...

    wing chun and height

I've been in Wing Chun for 1 year and I'm now 6'7" tall... although I was already this tall to begin with. Isn't height just in the genes?

    wing chun long pole

Thanks for the reply, Joy. Yes, I agree the key is doing the movements correctly with the proper balance but I thought for the conditioning aspect, you needed a pole heavy enough to work the muscles. Not sure if there's much of a difference in the weight of hard wood vs soft wood though. I...

    wing chun long pole

Yes, I do the wrist curl things with my bowflex but never tried a figure 8 motion. I'll give it a shot. Do you know if there's an actual weight difference in hard wood vs soft wood for a long pole like this or is the difference mainly in the strength of the pole?

    wing chun long pole

Wow! Those are great suggestions on forearm conditioning. I don't have free weights or a pullup bar though. Just a bowflex. lol For the long pole conditioning, I believe what I was thinking was: 5)And the last is to take a dowell rod and hang a 10# weight from it to where it just barely...

    wing chun long pole

I'd like to get a long pole (8 foot long, 1 or 2 inches diameter). I'm not going to be doing any forms or drills with it anytime soon so I'll mainly be using it for developing my forearm with a few exercises. I know the traditional long pole/dragon poles are made of hard wood but would any type...

    What keeps you going?

Interesting thread. I'm also kinda in a rut here. I've stopped training in mid-Oct and haven't been back yet. I stopped because we were in the busy and exhausting time of finding & purchasing our first home. We moved in at the end of Oct but I never went back because we're also about to have...

Wall bag - synthetic leather vs traditional canvas

Thanks for the replies! I'm liking the synthetic leather one since it's quite easy to clean and I can go full out right away. I also like the canvas one because this one will toughen up your fists... I don't think the synthetic leather one will do anything to toughen up your fists. Or am I...

Wall bag - synthetic leather vs traditional canvas

Which material would you go for in a wall bag? This will be for my personal home gym in my garage. For example, here's a synthetic leather one: http://www.everythingwingchun.com/Everything-Wing-Chun-Ultimate-3-Section-Wall-Bag-p/ewc-bag03-bpu.htm Here's a canvas one...

    making a home gym

Thanks for the quick reply. Yeah, I'm pretty stoked to finally have the chance of a home gym. I'm looking for some type of flooring but just think carpet or puzzle mats may not be the best for the tons of shifting/pivoting we do in wing chun. I could be way off there though as I've never...

    making a home gym

Anyone have a home gym? I'm moving into a new house and will be using a single car garage as a home gym. It's your typical cold cement flooring right now. Can someone give me pointers on what type of flooring I should install? Initially I was looking at just those puzzle mats but I don't...

You know Wing Chun? Show me!

lol I'll make sure I have a phonebook handy. ;-) Bong Lap sounds would be good too, as would the Tan Da (if given a hook punch or something like that) thanks for the great suggestions!

You know Wing Chun? Show me!

So this is just a fun thread I thought I'd toss here. I had family in town the other day and they heard I'm learning Wing Chun and asked me to show them some. I just blanked out I guess since I couldn't remember anything that they'd want to see. What kind of moves do you show friends...

    best shoes for pivoting?

Thanks. I'll take a look at those shoes. As for just using the shoes I wear everyday, I'm not allowed to be wearing outside shoes in the dojo/kwoon. The shoes I wear during class are my indoor basketball shoes which unfortunately have way too much grip and really jack my ankels and knees when...

    best shoes for pivoting?

Does anyone know where I can find a good pair of shoes for pivoting/shifting that are larger than size 13 mens? I've looked in the stores in town here (Victoria, BC) as well as online sites but they only go up to size 12 or 13. I assume the best types of shoes for this would be those which...

extremely sore palm, wrist & forearm - dragon pole

Last class was the first time I used a dragon pole (6 1/2 point pole) before. I'm still a beginner to Ving Tsun. After a pretty intense workout with it (top of the pole height of my head and keep it there while i lift the other end up above my head and drop back down and repeat). I felt fine...

Luk Dim Boom - 6 1/2 point pole

I'm a beginner in Ving Tsun (2 months in) and my sifu had us doing station drills. (eg. One person on the punching bag doing punches, pak-sau's, throat chops; another on the wooden dummy doing stepping movements and another lifting the pole up and down to strengthen our forearms/wrists and...

Chinese names for each step in Siu Nim Tau?

I signed up for my first month of Wing Chun classes. I do have a good feel about the instructor and the family of guys who train there. I have taken the one trial class and then 2 regular classes this week. It's a good 2 to 2.5hrs each class. Not sure if I wasn't doing the "horse" stance (Yee...

Just curious... what do you pay?

$30 for two 2hr sessions a week? Damn, that's a good deal. Yeah, I guess the only part I don't like is the bloody expensive testing for the sashes. At least there's only 6 different sash levels though and at least 7mth of training before you can test.

Please help me choose a school

I am going to try WC for one month because apparently, the student's first month is $80 and if he/she wants to continue, they must commit to a minimum of 3 more months. So if after the first month, I'm still uncertain, if I want to try anymore at all, I must pay another $240 for 3 more months...

Please help me choose a school

Thanks for the great replies. I'm going to stick to just one art for now. I went to a free trial class of Wing Chun the other day. The instructor is great and the class size is nice and small. I got a real family feel out of it. He taught me one on one for that class. He tried to teach me...

Just curious... what do you pay?

Thanks for the replies guys. They were all helpful. At $80Cdn/mo, I seem to be paying more but I'm also getting more hours per week. There are only 6 sash levels I believe and you need to train a min of 7 months straight before your allowed to grade for the next sash. It starts at $150 for...

Just curious... what do you pay?

I'm most likely going to start training at a Wing Chun school in town. I'm surprised at the price though. $80/mo (6hrs/week), plus another $25 for a mandatory handbook. Then it's $22 if i want the club t-shirt and $150+ each time I want to be graded for a new sash, plus ~$50 or more per hour...

Please help me choose a school

Thanks Si-Je for the advice. I'll definately go for the Wing Chun free trial, maybe as early as next week. I've heard some people say it's good to cross-train in Wing Chun & Kali/Escrima/Arnis. I have one instructor in town who seems like a great guy. His school is actually only 5min away...

Please help me choose a school

Thanks Nabakatsu. For a while now I've been having a hard time deciding if I should go for Krav Maga or if it should be Wing Chun. I want to be more confident and able to handle myself (if needed) on the street and that's where Krav Maga comes in, but I also want an art I can sink myself into...

Please help me choose a school

Quick question. I've just been looking more into the Wing Chun style of Kung Fu and I'm reading a lot about this being more aimed towards smaller people. Honestly, do you guys think I should be finding an art more suited to my size? I'm 6'7", 230lb, average to athletic build I guess. I hear...

Please help me choose a school

After writing my last post, I messed up my back by doing an exercise (probably incorrectly) that I have never done before. Supermans. Heard a loud snap in my back and have been in some pain until today. Also I have the "privilage" of having my in-laws visiting until next week. So probably...

Please help me choose a school

Thanks for the quick replies! The only down side to the second guy that I can see is the start time. Means I'll have to wait around downtown after work for 3hrs each time before class starts whereas the other guy's class is just an hour after work. I'll do the free lesson first and see if I...
