    How do your forms/katas progress?

Most kata in Japan comes from a manual. Not much room for free interpretation or for that matter free expression. If someone is not too sure about something.....They get out the manual. It's what drove me away from association based budo towards koryu. It was also the constant comments of...

    How do your forms/katas progress?

Related to this: So many time have I seen people go on an extensive seminar, then return to a dojo to relate what they have been shown. At the next seminar they do something that seems to be different. They will say to the sensei, "Ah, its changed". They will then be told, "No, nothing has...

Can a private anonymous moderated forum be set up, just for students of one lineage?

My school is 'Mongai Fushutsu' (Not to be shown outside) We dont even show fundamental waza at demonstrations. But we still have Facebook group. Any personal communication we can do through email or messenger. My Shihan would never even discuss things on the phone and prefered face to face. But...

    How do your forms/katas progress?

Yes I understand what you mean. With me mostly doing sword arts now its more clearly defined. Some founders were good enough to have even written about the philosophical values that we should adopt as well. so our accent has always been on preservation. Its essential to learn a fundamental...

Can a private anonymous moderated forum be set up, just for students of one lineage?

My Ryu has facebook group. What do you mean by one lineage. You have a single line with a founder dating back to the 1600's or before?

    How do your forms/katas progress?

What you say is not strictly true about koryu or waza. One could say that no two situations would ever be the same from a distance, position, timing etc. For this reason we have henka. We can do a particular waza with a specific variation. But that waza must still contain the fundamentals of a...

    How do your forms/katas progress?

The kata does not change. It's your understanding, or lack of it that changes. As you advance it hopefully gets better. Levels in kata? Real kata is a breakdown of a waza. So I guess if you can make up kata, you can make up levels

    Online martial arts courses

Please take it from me. Just forget any ideas of some numpy who puts courses online. There is no substitute for a real teacher face to face. That's what MA is. A personal hands on experience. Once you are advanced you might be able to supplement your training by watching your teachers videos...

For those who don't think English is my first language

Doing translation work I find that some sometimes its best to leave some words it the original language with a short (sometimes long) explanation of the roots of that word. Translating into English, one of the most bastardized languages has draw backs as you can manipulate a word to mean...

For those who don't think English is my first language

The first thing I found out was that to be proficient in Martial arts I had to learn Japanese. If you study Japanese arts your knowledge will be very superficial without it.

    Martial Arts|Types of Martial Arts!

I am already lost. Practiced and taught in Japan most of my life to Japanese. The good stuff is defensive. How about weapons. So is it you that are one of the "top noch" guys?

    Should kata be symmetrical?

Japanese kindergarten child (Yochiensei). Kinder1, Kinder 2 etc. To add to what I wrote about memorization. In a Japanese dojo you get two chances to correct anything. Screw up a third time? God help you. That's why it's an M.A dojo.

    Should kata be symmetrical?

You mean do a kata of kata? If you saw what a Japanese kinder can memorize in one go you would not think any kata as complicated.

    Should kata be symmetrical?

Briefly the meaning of kata (shape or form) is 1. A breakdown of a waza (tried and tested technique) to help one understand that waza in detail. 2. A made up set of forms to help you understand a particular art and string specific actions together in a certain direction. So we can move left or...

    Martial Arts Aren't Magic

I guess we had better tell that one to people like my father that went off to Africa at the outset of WWll aged fifteen. He lied about his age so that he could go. Probably before fifteen was the most violent part of my life. I was constantly bullied until I realized I had a certain natural...

    Martial Arts Aren't Magic

As far as Japan is concerned: Again your premise is based on a Western concept. In the country it comes from? It's little league. That's how it survived WWll. To be reinstituted after a five year suspension as a cultural sportlike tradition. No way will a dojo have "bland population". It far too...

    Martial Arts Aren't Magic

True because Japanese are Japanese. Nationality bonds them together. In some ways so much that its completely over the top with company taking preference to a family unit. Then when they do become individualistic they split and form yet another group. It can actually be a group conciousness...

    Martial Arts Aren't Magic

Thanks for that opinion. That explains a lot. Japan is not a violent society. Admittedly there are few cases like the recent sword problem. It's not as law abiding as they would like to think either because they keep things out of the media. But people dont usually have guns. They have faith...

    Martial Arts Aren't Magic

So whats magic about it? In Japan MA is like little league. A discipline that some catch on to because....... they can already fight. Even then nobody does it for self defense, but for competiton. NOT to defend themselves. This is where the concept has got twisted. Ater a lot of posts I now...

    Martial sacrilege (part 3)

Now and then, even in our lifetime someone turns up in the world that has exceptional skills to be revered and go down in history. I would not refer to them as styles but perhaps a refined 'art'. Did O Sensei makes stye called aikido? What a stupid word to use. Apart from that........ I guess...

    Stamps

Watching Ngannou vs Overeem yesterday. Why dont more people attempt stamps on the feet? Seems to me be a very valid action. If your opponent cant stand up any more with broken toes it's all over.

A serious question to adept martial artists about physical fitness...

A serious question to adept martial artists about physical fitness...

To answer the original post: As it's M.A. one hopes to incorporate what we learn into natural movement. This means building up a particular but not over developed muscle set getting rid of unneccesary phsyical actions or unwanted actions. With this in mind we hope to become an adept. We can...

    Martial Sacrilege (part 1)

Of course not always. But earning money from teaching it in Japan is against the budo constitution. So dont you think that when money is involved it somewhat changes the outlook on what is required to make the grade? Not that I am saying its bad.

    Martial Sacrilege (part 1)

To me even sugesting getting old is joke. It's like comparing a human with a mosquito. The human is the old guy the young one the mosquito. You watch it buzz around like an idiot and you 'swat it'. My 74 year old sensei beat the hell out of me twice day every day and I already had Nidan taken in...

    Martial Sacrilege (part 1)

Nothing actually wrong with it. Most gradings are done by associations. They vary and have different takes on what constitutes grades. Sadly a black belt spells money in the West. The biggest downfall has to be those that reach what they think is a high rank in the West then go to places like...
