Does Wing Chun train to Fight?

You learn fighting by fighting? No you would learn how to get your **** kicked pretty quickly. An instructor can give you the skills to defend yourself, teach you an art and discipline to succeed in said art, not to mention proper conduct and respect etc.. No instructer can give you theory on...

    Modern Day JKD

Thank you all for your replies. Some extremely interesting information, and kind of reminds of the world of Krav Maga. Both seem similar on paper at least. Yes so as a philosophy it makes a lot of sense that I guess a lot of people have just run with it as JKD, refined to something they can...

    Modern Day JKD

I have been wondering if what is JKD, has any bearing on what Bruce Lee originally set out? From what I have read of him, he was always looking to innovate and streamline, or at least tweak some things. Exactly what I am not entirely sure, but in today's world, has JKD moved on and been added...

    Philosophy of Wing Tsun.

I don't really worry about it too much. I guess when you find an art later in life, you have deengineer (sorry probably not a word) yourself and place the beginning from infancy, in line with everything you knew beforehand, and drop it. At my age, I doubt I will ever actually fully understand...

    Drills

Heavy bag work with punch combinations mainly as main stay. Including chain punching. Whatever else I need to work on basically. At moment more drills geared towards me coming back from last year health wise. Can't do very much even with stop kicks at the mo.

    R.I.P. Hawkins Cheung

RIP. Sounded like he was a great Sifu. I watched a documentary with Phil Morris talking about what it was like to be a teacher under him. Phil Morris being the son of Greg Morris the actor, and also an actor.

Do you modify your Wing Chun when sparring?

Haven’t got as far sparring in Wing Chun as yet, but as the system I study is modified, would it not all be exactly as the theme of the thread suggests, all open to personal, or system interpretation?

    New Years Resolutions

Same with the Park Run's that I hope to get back to. It's funny, or maybe not, that the old guy you refer to seems to be in every town/city. Where I am, there are two park runs done every Saturday. One of them has a a runner that will never be the fastest, will never be the slowest, but was...

    Wing Chun Uk Self Defence

Well should be all set to return to full training next week. Now the prospect of having to go through a brain scan (sure I have one lol) as the Neurologist can't actually say why my inherent weakness down the left side as they put, is actually there in the first place. Was also hoping to return...

Yes, Avivit Cohen. Loads of stuff on her on the web.

Does your Sifu approve of you posting here?

I don't think Sifu would have an issue, as long as it didn't bring anything in to disrupte. At seminars it is different, my partner wasn't allowed to film, and the same at grading. Facebook is a complete no no. Hopefully at some point I will be allowed to post myself doing the first form. I used...

    Fight Quest

Great shows. Especially the Krav one. There were some good tips in those shows too. I remember that Jimmy went to a boat to aid his balance while training Wing Chun. I believe it was for stances. But yes loved it. Somewhere on YouTube, Jimmy mentioned it in an interview about Belator in the main.

    Favorite Hong Kong Actor

For me Chow Yun Fat. Some his earlier film like Hard Bolied had a kind of darker comedy element to it, and I believe he still has the highest kill count in an HK film. But for me his best film was Replacement Killers, despite it bombing at the box office.

Three concepts on the utilization of forces

Agree. I am lucky enough to be very strong and take quite a bit to body. IE, if they slammed in to me. But yes not so efficient, or wise on many levels.

    Wing Chun Uk Self Defence

Will be going back in January to see how my body will cope. Had much trouble with my footwork after grading, then my health deterioration there after. Bummer really because i wanted to grade at least twice more this year. Here is me and my training partner in the first row. Managed to help him...

Three concepts on the utilization of forces

Dead force to me sounds like a Star Wars film. Tbh, brute force can fail quite easily, so really are two not the same. Had a look and just seems another interpretation. Doesn't make anymore real.

Actually never heard of this one. Is this like Chinese?

Three concepts on the utilization of forces

Indeed. When the head Sifu decided to open the schools they did (initially two) they had refined, and in essence redesigned the approach. Keeping to core principles, but more licence towards doing other things. It is a lot different from VT that I do know from the first form and also we don't...

Three concepts on the utilization of forces

So far with what I have been taught, momentum goes forward, and keeps going. Block/parry and strike in quick succession. We don't actually use momentum in that way you have said. The trick for us not too allow it the first place. If we are in a position where the encounter needs to redressed, we...

    The Non Spinning back fist.

In dirty boxing yeah. Back in the day, grappling and such like was there. There is a club Urban Boxing down on the South coast in the UK. They have recorded some seminar stuff for YouTube, albeit a few years ago, but very interesting to watch. But I guess like a lot of Krav, it is down to...

Three concepts on the utilization of forces

Yes, the more I read it now, then it makes sense. Probably been doing this in class with Sifu. We don’t get to do any sparring though until a higher grade, due to safety for our fellow class mates, and having to be very proficient in what we know. Some of us have clocked in class, but not in a...

Three concepts on the utilization of forces

Yes of course, I see what it alludes to now. I call it the coiled spring affect, take a bump, then give it back. At least I think I am on the right road here. To remember things mainly, I have to give them names until I get the terminology right.

Three concepts on the utilization of forces

Seems a bit contradictory to me. Give up your own, you have already lost (keep but unleash when necessary). Combine the forces, not necessary as you have lost control of the fight already. Give them back, that is a counter attack to minimise losses. Sorry, but I don't understand this. Not a...

    The Non Spinning back fist.

True, but what about a dirty boxer whom would still cut to left deep, anticipate a strike, block with elbow and then used forced momentum to go for a grapple. Perhaps even finish with head but, then withdraw. Would that work do you think?

    New Years Resolutions

Going to try personally. Cracked a few things this year like getting fat again lol. Yes though, one hopefully I can get around to is New York in December. My partners sister and daughter ran the half marathon a couple of weeks ago or so, but I want to see Madison Square Garden for one, as well...
