What are the martial arts to you?

Like many people, I started for self-defense. I wanted to be able to protect myself in case something "went down"....I didn't want to be the thing that went down...;) After about a year in the arts, I realized that it was an inextricable part of me...it was in my blood, and there to stay...

    Time in each rank

I'd weigh in on the "long enough" angle... Yes, I think that there should be "average" times...guidelines, more or less, just to work out how long it should take to cover the material in suitable depth. As an instructor, you want to be sure that your students understand what is being taught in...

Why do you require your Black Belts to teach?

Here's my 2 cents' worth: I've never been *required* to teach, so I can't speak to that. I would say that is kind of a sketchy practice at best, but hey....different people have different methods. All of the Black Belts that I have known as teachers *wanted* to be a teacher. My former head...

    Yellow belt

Congratulations, Manny! I hope to be following you into yellow belt soon....the other white belts I've been training with in class got to go for their test last Saturday, so I'm kind of hoping my day is coming up.... Sounds like you had an awesome experience! Peace-- --Tonbo

    What is Kempo?

And now for a less serious answer: "Kenpo is percussion class, where you use other students as the instruments". /bow Peace -- --Tonbo

Getting the Most Out of Training

Greetings! I have recently started over in some aspects of my martial arts journey, and have had a lot of good opportunities to remind myself of some things....and I thought that some of these things might be helpful to others. If they are, great! If not...well...great! :) All thoughts are...

    Back to White Belt...

LOL....so I step away from the posts/boards for a while and lose my train of thought....sheeeeeeeesh. Anyway, a couple of thoughts: suicide/mwd: I have no problems wearing white again. It's acknowledgement of starting over with different styles/techniques/etc. I still practice my "old"...

    Back to White Belt...

Ok, just signed up for the 2 year program, and am having a *ball* in class. I love my new white belt, and wear it proudly. :) Thanks for all the words, guys! (And mwd, Mr. Wheaton said, "Yes, I probably do.". LOL) Peace -- --Tonbo

    what is a martial artist?

Just my personal opinion/POV: I differentiate between a "karate (generic term) guy" and "martial artist" this way.... A "karate guy" (or "kung fu guy", etc.) is one who does the moves, may know the terms, etc., but has no heart in the actions. This encompasses such people as younger kids...

    What was your original motivation?

I wanted to get into martial arts as a young kid, but it never got off the ground....my dad supposedly knew some MA (I think it was just stuff he learned in the army), and was going to teach my brother and myself, but only after and if we could hold a broomstick out in front of us at arm's...

    Back to White Belt...

Amen *that*, Still_Learning. Belt color doesn't matter. What matters more to me is that no one thinks I'm some sort of "belt collector", or just a general a$$ who is trying to show off, somehow. I am having a TON of fun in class....the hardest part is seriously trying to keep control of the...

    Can YOU Be Beaten?

Can *I* be beaten? Hell yes, happens all the time. :) I'm taking this to mean "beaten" as in, "generally considered to have lost an encounter". In that case, yes. I've been beaten in point sparring, kata and technique competitions, and even short story contests. If you mean "beaten" as...

"So, you think you can take me?"

Personally, I've never had this sort of thing happen...then again, I don't train outside in public for that reason. Always the chance that there's someone with something they think they have to prove, and just enough stupidity to try it. One quote I like, and I forget the source, was: "Look...

    Howdy!

Heya, Clint! First of all, I agree heartily with mwd0818, but I see that I would be late in voicing my concern....sadly, martial arts are horribly, horribly addictive....but then again, it's a *good* addiction. If you have to roll with any gang, a good martial arts school/family is...

    Back to White Belt...

Thanks for the welcome, guys. It feels good to be home, both in a new school and back on the MT boards. I am studying in SLC, UT. We have some pretty great guys out here, and the lovely town of Provo, UT (Brigham Young University) is the holy site where Mr. Parker actually started out in...

    Back to White Belt...

Greetings to all Kenpo folks! (Kenpoists, kenpoka, whatever you want to call yourselves...<g>) I started in Kenpo many, many years back, in an offshoot school that wasn't affiliated with any organization, and had very little ties to more "traditional" versions of Kenpo (fewer techniques...

    Back from an absence....

Greetings to all, both old and new members! I was a member of MT some time back, and "stepped away" for a bit...and it wound up being a bit longer than expected. :( However, it is nice to see some of the old names still around, and good to see that martial discussion is not dead. I look...

    Back From Long Hiatus

LOL...I wouldn't say I'm "one of the good ones"....but I'm back, anyway. I'm a perpetual white belt. LOL Thanks to everyone for the welcomes. It does feel good to be back. :) Peace-- Tonbo

    Back From Long Hiatus

Greetings to all! I am back after a few years away from Martial Talk....I used to be a regular follower of the threads, then life kinda got in the way, and then, well....I just never got back to it. My loss. :) Anyway, I'm back to lurk, post, and share ideas, and look forward to seeing old...
