    In over my head.

Having worked with gang members for awhile, I see some good suggestions here already, e.g, some kind of productive pastime (paid or hobby) and strong mentoring. But unfortunately, that is sometimes not enough. Over the years, I've seen gangs back off a kid for two reasons. 'Going christian' is...

Is Kung Fu "on the decline"?

I can only speak from my experience, having no broad knowledge of what's happening out there. But for my little club, I've lost several beginning students (six months or less in our school) to MMA gyms. The interesting thing is, though, that I usually find out later they lasted even less time in...

    "Knowing" a Form

Me too. Then I try to teach it, and find I don't really know it at all. ;)

    Forms: A total fighting system?

Interesting question. I have 11 by black belt, with more in depth understanding required in four of those. One of the four can be their choice. The breadth is to expose students to different ways of moving and fighting, not just letting them settle early on for what they like or don't. But then...

    For those over 50

That's the one. Thanks, Terry. :asian:

    For those over 50

Anybody read the book called (I think... I have it but not here) Martial Arts after 40? Wondering if it's worthwhile to put everything else aside and read it now?

    For those over 50

Interesting replies. Also edifying to know there are so many others in the same boat. I can barely remember 50 :D but here goes. As others, have broken many things and torn many others. Even into my mid-50s this was a nuisance, yet I still felt youthful enough that the affliction always seemed...

    Temporarily Bowing Out....

All the best to them and to you. That's a very difficult situation, even with the best possible outcome, and I applaud you for taking it on. :asian:

67 yr old man uses his Bus-Fu to kick punks ***

Makes good sense. I've seen too much of the predator mindset to see it quite this way. A couple months ago, a 5'5" kid who weighs about 105 pounds attacked one of our teachers, former college football player, who is 6'3" and 230. This is just one of many examples I've seen through the years...

67 yr old man uses his Bus-Fu to kick punks ***

Having worked with teens on the fringe the last twenty years, I see a lot of truth in this. The only thing I wonder here is, it seems your sisters may have been pretty evenly matched. That sorta takes the bully element out of the equation, it seems to me (not to insert myself into your family...

This is what I see, too. Yeah, far better to avoid, but if push comes to shove, well...I detest bullies.

I'm still waitin' to see the kid put his foot up that ***. Maybe after he comes back from his ambulance ride...? Seriously, yeah it'd be better to let this kinda foolishness go, but sometimes you're mad as hell, and can't take it anymore.

    Martial Arts Associations/Foundations/Federations/etc.

Stop sugar coating it.   I wanna know what you really think. :D Seriously, there was a time I cared about this stuff, but it's long past. It's like comparing what school you got your degree at. Useless in predicting how successful one will be in the field.
