What Kind Of Martial Arts Do You Do?

Obligatory stint in TKD (20ish years ago), a year stint in a kajukenbo offshoot (5 years ago), Uechi Ryu for the past 9 months

    New karate kid tv series

yeah but he was a jerk in the movies too. Stealing girlfriends, picking fights, using illegal kicks, it only makes sense the carry that into the show

    How long has it been...

we had to move to a park since the dojo shut down (my instructor rented time from another school) but we never stopped doing contact work. But if someone doesn't feel comfortable they are able to work on Kata instead of contact drills

    Doing forms with eyes closed

My instructor had me do this for the first time a couple weeks ago with Kanshiwa (our second Kata) it was eye opening so to speak. seemed like I was better able to focus on the techniques, even though my internal compass was off and I ended in a different position than I started.

    constant relocation and training

Great perspective, I can always pick up my current style again when I get back to an area with a good school. I guess initially I was to caught up in "what style" more than simply training. Looks like I may be headed to Korea for a year, I seriously doubt there are Uechi Ryu schools there...

    Uechi-Ryu Circle Block

excuse my ignorance only 4 months into this. I'm being taught to stay pretty ridged in the upper body, so when I execute a circle block its solely an arm movement, the elbow stays close in but moves in a small circle in conjunction with the fore arm. the for arm reaches out to meet the attack...

    Uechi-Ryu Circle Block

its primarily an arm movement, being a beginner (during Kata/Bunkai is slightly more fluid for the beginner) I was taught to complete the step, execute the block then complete the next technique so between those two we would freeze the body and move the arm. The advanced students typically...

    Uechi-Ryu Circle Block

    Uechi-Ryu Circle Block

so this thread has been silent for a few months, but I figured I'd give an update. I've now been training for 4 months and I'm finally beginning to feel more comfortable in the stances and with the circle block (main reason for the start of this thread). My instructor recently promoted me...

    Training out doors

That's how it was in VA, NC, and SC. spent 20 years between those states so I'm pretty happy to be back in a desert.

    Training out doors

If I was on the east coast training outside would be hard for me, but my allergies are considerably less here in the the desert. That's a pretty awesome idea actually.

    Training out doors

eh my instructor is twice my age, and I've been doing this military thing for to long so sir comes natural. he'd be fine if I used his first name, its just weird to me

    Training out doors

From what my instructor has told me they do a kneeling bow in the beginning/end of class. and we do a standing bow before formal exercises (kumite/bunkai). but that's about it. I call him Sir or Mr. "Last Name": depending on the situation but that's just how I was raised.

    Training out doors

Its been pretty nice here in New Mexico. Especially since I've been relegated to an office position, its nice to have the hours outside

    Training out doors

What are peoples preferences, training out doors/more informal or training in an actual dojo. I'm now roughly 3 months into my Uechi Ryu journey, and thanks to the Rona and our governor having some of the strictest restrictions in the US, I've only trained out side. That being said its...
