Next week Time magazine will choose its annual Person of the Year. Will it be Karl Rove? Michael Moore? The whole Red Sox squad?

Never mind. Call 2004 the Year of Our Lord. This was the year Jesus imprinted his record-smashing image on pop culture and politics, the year Americans confirmed again how their deeply held beliefs define personal identities and national divisions.

Perhaps only a certain kind of Jesus got to shine in contentious 2004. The year proved it's a nation of competing Christs. That is, everyone claimed a different piece of Jesus, the piece that shored up his or her particular vision of holiness.

Does Jesus oppose abortion, liberal courts and Will and Grace? Or does Jesus embrace progressivism, poor people and anti-pollution protocols? Neither? Both?
