Alan Parsons...actually a lot will do ("Silence and I", "Old And Wise", "Limelight"", "Ammonia Avenue") but the one that hits me the most is "Oh Life (There Must Be More)"
--------------------
Waves roll out
Out to sea
Tasting the salt-water
Tears upon her cheek
Morning breaks
She's not there
Who could ever find her?
Who would even care?

No one heard
No one came
No angel of mercy
Appears to know her name
Where is hope
When words fail
All the colours running
Inside when life turns pale

In the dock the boats are harboured
Where the water's cold and still
Oh life, she cries, I've lost the will
From the bridge she sees a lifetime
Being washed upon the shore
Oh life, she cries
There must be more..
.
Ahh Jay, another prog rocker? :) Though you're gonna get all shouty and tell me there's WAY more to APP than that, right??? I can't claim any great knowledge of the Project though I was given Love Songs (yeah, uh-huh) and yeah, Ammonia Avenue is a stand out for me. But you give yourself away with this selection Jay and maybe you're a little like me but if I had these selections in my head I'd be wanting to take myself away for a bit and here's one you might not hate too much from mister tubular bells himself that sums up how I feel sometimes - TOO often probably which is why I'm out here and not back home :)

And the man in the rain picked up his bag of secrets,
And journeyed up the mountainside,
Far above the clouds,
And nothing was ever heard from him again,
Except for the sound,
Of Tubular Bells.

Jenna, I hope you don’t mind me saying but you seem such a completely endearing person [sincerely]. Your verve has on more than one occasion made me smile and I get the impression of you as a very genuine person. Well just for you, here's a ditty from the Pistols that says hey people drop all the nonsense and pretense, I don't care for it, I'm me and I'm the genuine article, no BS and no padding - a top track Pretty Vacant. I'd put it on when I think people are getting up themselves.

Don't ask us to attend 'cos we're not all there
I don't pretend 'cos I don't care
I don't belive illusions 'cos too much is for real
So stop your cheap comment 'cos we know what we feel
Oh we're so pretty, oh so pretty... We're vacant
Oh we're so pretty, oh so pretty... We're vacant
Ah but now... And we don't care!

Respects!
Ahh my friend Doc Holliday you are too kind :) And well, yeah I was born too late I think for so much of the greatest music like the Pistols back in the day but they can have a place in my earspace anydays. I'd never have taken Pretty Vacant that way, to me it was a badboy shouty song about well, pretentious and stupid folk as you explained but as a counterbalance to people getting up themselves, well I can see that too I think. Niiiice! OK then, I'm not gonna compete with Sid and Jonny for that - as the boy says - is impossible, ha! Nope I'm gonna throw one atcha that I'd bang on when I'm feeling a bit... er bad :D From the amazing Primal Scream when they went all mad with Evil Heat. This is Miss Lucifer, wow! If you've got it, spin it for me so you know what I'm talking bout!!!

Skinny girl, dressed in black
Leather boots, nazi hat
Tattoed panther, vampire cape
Sexy dancer, magdalene grace

Shake it baby
Shake it baby
Shake it baby
Shake it baby
SHAKE!

Panther girl, take me home
Hip to hip, bone to bone
Evil heat, all night long
Evil heat, all night long
Shake it baby (all night long)

Ooooh baby, how's that grab ya??

Hey Hand Sword san :)
You're playin with me right? I'm too stupid to know when I'm being played with so I'm just gonna go right ahead and take you at your word, ha! Ok, well you know what happens to you working guys that grind on through the daily drudge over and over and over and get turned around and round and find yourselves relentlessly oppressed by the MAN and put in life's thumbscrews? Eventually it all rips asunder, oh yeah, I'm feeling that from ya, LOL :D!

So, don't hold back now, go on in that workplace and let 'em have it, ha! Go on, listen to the voices in your head, it's your friend Alec Empire...

This is our world. It has no future. I'd rather trust strangers. I expect to die at any moment. My own hand is reaching out for the blade. Because my soul has found the answers: ALL the answers...

Alec Empire.. You ain't killin me.
You might not have the stomach for my man Alec E but I think a quick spin would do your heart the worlda good, ha! Go on now and have a nice day @ work and say hi to your boss from me :D

OK so I guess down and underneath, I’m feeling a bit annoyed and maybe as if I don't really care so much about things at the minute and not in a Limp Bizkit "Break Stuff" way but more in a Trent Reznor "Sin" sort of way. If I wasn't angry at people before I listened to this well I am now, ha! So....
You give me the reason, you give me control.
I gave you my purity and my purity you stole.
Did you think I wouldn't recognise this compromise. Am I just too stupid to realise.
Stale incense, old sweat and lies! Lies! Lies!

It comes down to this: your kiss; your fist; and your straining gets under my skin, within.
Take in, the extent of my sin.

Although I prefer Sanctified and, particularly now, Ringfinger from PHM, I do like the rest of the cd, too.

Right now, I'm in a bit of a Ministry mood...

stronger than reason
stronger than lies
the only truth i know
is the look in your eyes
the look in your eyes

When I'm wistful, it's more of the plaintive Genesis I turn to...

Dark and grey, an English film, the Wednesday Play
We always watch the Queen on Christmas Day
Won't you stay?

Though your eyes see shipwrecked sailors you're still dry
The outlook's fine though Wales might have some rain
Saved again.

or Queen...

Thinkin' it right and doin' it wrong
It's easier from an arm chair
Waves of alternatives wash over my sleepiness
Have my eggs poached for breakfast I guess

I'll leave it to you to name the songs themselves

I find a couple of Staind songs coming to mind. I'll skip to my favorite parts:

It's Been Awhile
And it's been awhile
Since I can say that I wasn't addicted
And it's been awhile
Since I can say I love myself as well
And it's been awhile
Since I've gone and f----d things up just like I always do
And it's been awhile
But all that s--t seems to disappear when I'm with you

And everything I can't remember
As f----d up as it all may seem
The consequences that I've rendered
I've gone and f----d things up again

Why must I feel this way?
Just make this go away
Just one more peaceful day!

and...

Outside

But I'm on the outside
And I'm looking in
I can see through you
See your true colors
'Cause inside you're ugly
You're ugly like me
I can see through you
See to the real you

But I feel
Tomorrow will be OK
Hey green meanie purring pussycat, LOL :D

Well, check and touche. Though you haven't said for WHY you listen to these tracks or more importantly, what good it's doing ya? Not my business of course and so I'll go with Staind - haven't heard so very much from them boys lately?? OK, so I'm feeling your mood, believe me I am and the cure for your pain? Why the "hair of the dog that bit ya" - more pain of course. This song has a place burnt in my heart and these are amazing and lovely boys H.I.M. and and I just adore the gorgeous accent. A little more metal than Staind no doubt but I'm sure a big scary grappler like you can take it and if you don't have the "Funeral of Hearts" please see if you can, and then spin it for me so you know what I mean:

Love's the Funeral Of Hearts and an ode for cruelty,
When angels cry blood on flowers of evil in bloom,
The Funeral Of Hearts and a plea for mercy,
when love is a gun separating me from you.

She was the sun! Shining upon the tomb of your hopes and dreams so frail,
He was the moon! Painting you with its glow, so vulnerable and pale.

She was the wind carrying in all the troubles and fears you've for years tried to forget.
He was the fire restless and wild and you were like a moth to that flame.

The heretic seal beyond divine, A prayer to god who's deaf and blind,
The last night's souls on fire, three little words and a question: WHY?

Love's the Funeral Of Hearts and an ode for cruelty,
When angels cry blood on flowers of evil in bloom,
The Funeral Of Hearts and a plea for mercy,
when Love is a gun separating me from you.

Got that? Go on now, go and get it for me.

Like A Rolling Stone ~ Bob Dylan

Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime, in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to, laugh about
Everybody that was, hanging out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging, for your next meal.

(Chorus)
How does it feel?
How does it feel?
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
Hey Ralph :) Bob WHO?? Dude, ha! Bob is just the MAN and his songwriting influence has gone SO far and wide that music luvvers don't even know they're really listening Bob's words and not to G'n'R (Knockin'...) and all the others. Actually correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the Stones cover this one here themselves?? But me, I like to keep it closer to home and cite one of his best contemporaries, the legendary Jimi. Besides Hey Joe and Voodoo Chile, Jimi's finest hour in my not so humble opinion was All Along the Watchtower which naturally is a Dylan choon although to me Jimi's version far outstripped the original but no matter, just one line only says everything and surely speaks for itself:

There must be some kinda way outta here said a joker to the thief
There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief.

Amazing, when it comes to Dylan, the pen truly is mightier than the sword - unless you're an Iaido guy Ralph, in which case forget that! Kudos to you for posting up this one!!

Oh, btw - you REALLY a caver?? Ever find anything interesting down there on your drops?? Like treasure or fossils or ancient tombs?? ;)

In the old days, it was a Monza Red Mitsubishi 3000 GT. A CD player in a car in 1992 was not totally exclusive, but pretty rare. Of course, by that time, the song was already 14 years old...

http://www.boston.org/boston.html

P.S. The artist states, and I agree, that the way to listen to this music is not on an MP3 player. It really does affect the music (even if you use some of those fancy Bose headphones).
OK, a big digression from the thread but who cares - I gotta say wow, Michael a nice machine I always had a soft spot for the 3000GT and four super big pipes sticking out the back I remember, so COOL. They're not still in production are they?? Back home I noticed a huge increase in the popularity of the GTO - a very clever and very fast motor but not so powerful as the 3000GT. And Boston so good for driving, yes?? Oh and I wonder why their music is not so great on the MP3?? Blame the producer I say because I find the sound quality is great from my little machine, I rip all my stuff as VBR and have it nice and LOUD through a super set of etymotic Shures and I've heard a lot of yakking about the glory days of vinyl and all the missing frequencies when they switched to CD but I can't understand that. Is that snobbery I wonder or is there truth to it? Anyhoo, I'm probably not really a big or fancy audiophile but I love my music and I've got all this here my whole collection in one little place and I wouldn't give that up for anyone!

Thanks SO much for following up on this and do you still have the 3000GT ? Oh, did you guys over there get the Mitsubishi Starion?? I guy I knew used to run one of those in the old days, ha! What a cool motor and very underrated, ahhh, the memories. Good one Michael!

Stabbing Westward - Save Yourself

I know your life is empty
And you hate to face this world alone
So you're searching for an angel
Someone who can make you whole
I can not save you
I can't even save myself
So just save yourself

I know that you've been damaged
Your soul has suffered such abuse
But I am not your savior
I am just as ****ed as you
I am just as ****ed as you
I can not save you
I can't even save myself
So just save yourself

Please don't take pity on me
Please don't take pity on me
Please don't take pity on me
Please don't take pity on me

My life has been a nightmare
My soul is fractured to the bone
And if I must be lonely, I think I'd rather be alone
I think I'd rather be alone

You can not save me
You can't even save yourself
I can not save you
I can't even save myself
Save yourself
So just save yourself

Hey Jim - sunny side up today?? :D

Ya know, I'm digging this for real!! Sanctified eh? Well I can't argue at all with that at all though there's something about Pretty Hate - that sort of creepy fingernails on blackboard sort of feel that I think suits it well. And With Teeth I liked a LOT - very DRIVING. And what else... Minstry? Oh so ya like to get a bit rough too and lemme see, Genesis and Queen, yep, I'm getting the flava here. Ok, something's coming. Let me dial my dial and let's just see here. Well, you might not have heard them and actually from a while back - a GOOD while back I think but if you can find it, I GUARANTEE you will LIKE. I don't even think they're around anymore - one LP only but they are the stunning Sunna and this is from "Power Struggle"

I will survive cause I want more
And I will create a bigger war
And I will rule over and give you hell
And then you will do as I command
Cause I will be here when you are gone
Yeah I'll still be here when you are gone
I'll fill you with fear of the holy son
I want all that I am

Cause I was made to fly
Yeah, I was made to fly
You were made to die
But I was made to fly

*tired fingers*

Jim, if you can, I'd love you to go download that one. It's a rarity and a gem I promise :) :)

Hey Josh :) I gotta admit this bird has escaped me. Stabbing Westward? Got any links or anything? I'd love to have a listen, gimme gimme gimme, ha! I'm certainly getting a hard edge off of them there lyrics.... Ok, I checked them and industrial rock, right? And we've already had some NIN so I'll give you some of Jim's Ministry oh yeah, gotta be BAD BLOOD. Feel the pain everybody, ha! I fire this one on before I go to church on Sunday mornings LOL, just jokin wid ya. I use this to put myself softly to sleep, ha! Stop me somebody...

What's lies?
Full moon and thoughts collide
We look for answers in those catatonic, dying blod-shot eyes
We ask if vermin are the ones that already learned
Those aren't tears,
They're just bad bad blood

Just bad bad blood!

What lies?
No big surprise.
We get our clues from the ones who thought up they will conquer us
Are we too f_ _ _d to say the end is here too much?
We're in denial with bad blood

Help me I am in hell... and lovin it, LOL :D

Jenna,

well I am going to pull somthing from the Obscure Canadian Folk Music File here.. *grin* Do bear with me..

Stan Rogers was on eof Canda's greatest musical legends and he wrote songs that chronicled it's diverse past and present. This song, Northwest Passage was the first song I ever heard from him and it made me an instant fan. It is normally sung acapella with a slightly gravelly maritime accent for colour (that's right I am spelling color with a "u" damn it like I was taught back home...live with it! *grin*)

Chorus:

Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea;
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea.

Westward from the Davis Strait 'tis there 'twas said to lie
The sea route to the Orient for which so many died;
Seeking gold and glory, leaving weathered, broken bones
And a long-forgotten lonely cairn of stones.

Three centuries thereafter, I take passage overland
In the footsteps of brave Kelso, where his "sea of flowers" began
Watching cities rise before me, then behind me sink again
This tardiest explorer, driving hard across the plain.

And through the night, behind the wheel, the mileage clicking west
I think upon Mackenzie, David Thompson and the rest
Who cracked the mountain ramparts and did show a path for me
To race the roaring Fraser to the sea.

How then am I so different from the first men through this way?
Like them, I left a settled life, I threw it all away.
To seek a Northwest Passage at the call of many men
To find there but the road back home again.

At it's core it is a song about the Adventurers' Spirit and how we cannot help but be what we are... I hope you enjoy the poetry and if you like I'll try and dig up an mp3 of it..

Regards,
rob

Hey Josh, :) thanks SO much for this link, now that there's a sound I could listen to - oh and a cute vocalist helps too, LOL :) Reminds me a little bit of Audioslave - great stuff! And nice when a band's site offers up something useful too ie. FREE MUSIC - even if it is only half of each track! Seriously, thanks for this :) OK, well since you've been such a sweetie for me, have some of that good Audioslave stuff. This one reminds me that sometimes being me is maybe good enough after all, if you've got it, I'd love you to crank it up for me...

Someone falls to pieces sleeping all alone
Someone kills the pain spinning in the silence
She finally drifts away someone gets excited
In a chapel yard and catches a bouquet
Another lays a dozen white roses on a grave

Yeahhh...
And to be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can do

Someone finds salvation in everyone, another only pain
Someone tries to hide himself, down inside himself he prays

Someone swears his true love until the end of time, another runs away

Separate or united Healthy or insane?
And to be yourself is all that you can do

Yeahhh...
To be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can do
Be yourself is all that you can do

And yeah I hear what you're saying bout driving to NIN for real! I've been stopped by the boys in blue with everything from Manson to Faith No More blaring to the last time which was only just before I left London and I got pulled over to a thumpin background of Smack my B_tch Up, LOL. So you just stop that now and TURN IT DOWN, you're a danger to yourself!! Ha!Speak soon.

Hey Rob, that's fantastic, thanks :) :) Yeah, the prose reminds me of Neil Young or a coupla others you might not have heard. Very pretty poetry. I went on his site and couldn't listen damn RealPlayer are looking for credit cards now - what happened to FREE?? Anyway, thanks again for this and here's the very best track ever from mister Young and truly a song to fall in love to :)

I am just a dreamer,
but you are just a dream,
You could have been
anyone to me.
Before that moment
you touched my lips
That perfect feeling
when time just slips
Away between us
on our foggy trip.

You are like a hurricane
There's calm in your eye.
And I'm gettin' blown away
To somewhere safer
where the feeling stays.
I want to love you but
I'm getting blown away.

And Rob what about that "adventurer's spirit" is it gone? Has that indomitable spirit in us all gone and flown after the $$$ I wonder?

"We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground, have you found, the same old fears?
Wish you were here..."

On the Turning away
From the pale and downtrodden
and the words they say
which we won't understand
"Don't accept that what's happening
Is just a case of other's suffering
Or you'll find that you are joining in
The turning away"

It's a sin that somehow
Light is changing to shadow
And casting its shroud
Over all we have known
Unaware how the ranks have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that we're all alone
In the dream of the proud.

On the wings of the night
As the day time is stirring
Where the speechless unite
In a silent accord
Using words you will find are strange
And mesmerised as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change
On the wings of the night

No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
No more turning away
From the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
It's not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that there'll be
No more turning away

A little more Pink Floyd, from Momentary Lapse of Reason.

Hey mister Flying Crane :) Yeah I hear ya - and you picked a good one there too. But ya know, you've actually caught me in a bit of a more chilled mood at the minute and you probably got this yourself it's our good friend David Gilmour who else and no matter what anybody says, I'm glad he's still going, Floyd or not, no?? I love this, so sweet and warm and comforting and mellow - "On an Island" If you've got it, come on and listen along... :) :)

Remember that night...
White sails in the moonlight
They walked it too...
Through empty playground, this ghost's town
Children again on rusting swings getting higher
Sharing a dream
On an Island.... it felt right
We lay side by side,
Between the moon and the tide
Mapping the stars for a while
Let the night surround you
We're half way to the stars,
Ebb and flow
Let it grow..... feel the warmth beside you

Love your crazy avatar btw, which film I can't place it??

I just got On an Island last month. My wife gave it to me for my birthday. Great stuff, by I haven't got they lyrics down yet, still too new for me.

The avatar is Leon, from Bladerunner. Back in the early 1980s, with Harrison Ford as a bounty hunter who hunts down wayward, homicidal androids sometime in the not-too-distant future. It's based on the book, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Phillip K. Dick. I actually liked the movie quite a lot better.
