Hello, I'm looking for a kenjutsu school in texas. I live in Keller, Texas and can't seem to find anything online. i found http://www.dentondojo.com/ but the way he trains i dont think it would fit me. I know what style i want to learn but its only available in japan. so im looking for a style that i would enjoy closer to me, at least untill i can make my way to japan. Im willing to travel up to 70 miles to learn. I just haven't been able to find a place. So any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all

Other than the DFWKIK (I personally think kendo is what you really want) and John Ray in Denton (always my first recommendation to anyone looking for Japanese sword arts), you've only got a couple of other choices in the DFW area.

I've hear a lot of people referring John Ray in Denton, I think I would like his class, but I was curious why he is referred so much? As well as why does he not allow sparring? I think because of safety reasons but I dont actually know. Also the style I would love to take is Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō-ryū thats the one only in japan and from what i understand its all sorts of martial training.
My Sensei Kim Taylor, (iaido 7th Dan, Jodo 5th Dan), has trained with John Ray, and has nothing but good things to say about him. I know of others who have trained with him, and they all say good things about him. There are only a several dozen, maybe, people who do JSA in North America at his level.
Let start this over, what is it youre looking for? Any JSA? Or Katori Shintō-ryū specifically? Regardless of what you answer, why? Why do you think you want to train in X, Y or Z school? Youve never done JSA, so how would you know?
Traditional JSA generally do not have sparring, we all have to get up for work and school in the morning. ITs just a hobby after all. You want Kendo if you want to spar.
Kenjitsu is generally all partner kata, like iaido is generally all solo kata. Of course we do some kenjistu in iaido and do some iaido in kenjitsu.

Actually, you've received incorrect information. There are a number of authorized TSKSR dojo practicing outside of Japan. A list of authorised instructors has been provided by Phil Relnick, who has a dojo up in Washington state ... http://www.tenshinsho-den-katori-shinto-ryu.org/
Ken has asked some very good questions which you should consider. Never enter the Japanese sword arts with preconceptions, or you'll likely be disappointed.

As others already mentioned, there is no free sparring in JSA. Same with traditional unarmed arts btw. I practise ninpo and jujutsu in Genbukan. No free sparring there either.
If free sparring is what you want, then go for kendo. If that is not what you want (because you want a traditional JSA school), then denton dojo seems to be a good choice after all.
