. . . Ermak was climbing rocks at Sentinel Rock, a viewpoint area that has stairs leading to the landing. He was in an area outside the landing, which is roped off with cable, when he fell; Bell said Ermak was not wearing a helmet or any other rock climbing equipment.

. . .

Ermak's mother, Tricia Leonard of Pleasanton, said he was visiting for the weekend and had gone to the mountain with friends dealing with issues in their lives. Rock climbing was an area in which her son found comfort, Leonard said.

After going to college Ermak . . . became interested in Asian cultures. He learned martial arts at the Bujinkan School of Ninjutsu and Enbukan School of Battojutsu, both in Santa Cruz, and last month went to Japan, where he earned his black belt.

"He was very spiritual," she said.

Ermak, a graduate of San Ramon Valley High, lived in Danville. He was a senior at UC Santa Cruz majoring in history.
