While the title of the article "An End to AIDS?" is somewhat misleading, the overall article is quite good and worth a read.

In particular, it addresses some of the concerns of treating a disease like this, the massive cost involved, and some cutting-edge science that gives hope for future cures (though the one person actually cured is an impractical example, it has led to new areas of research and new approaches to the infection).

To bring the discussion closer to home, an article on this interactive HIV/AIDS map of the US was recently published. While the data used is from 2008, it reportedly took a long time to collate and put it into graphical format; now that that's done, they plan to update as new information becomes available.

If you can deal with her writing style, erv over at scienceblogs is a researcher working in the lab with HIV, and shares a great deal of much more current information, and the tricks and tactics basically as they get published. You can get an appreciation for why it's such an intractable problem, and how we're trying to assault it on every frontier.

Forewarned, she's got opinions(liberal), shares them, and will flame.

Still, a good place to learn.
