I have seen some MA school websites that has text and picture, but no video. Even if there is a video, there are just some talking in that video and no action.

You don't need to explain

- the history of your school.
- how good your main instructor is.

Just show what your students will learn.

To attract new students to your school, will it be better to have a "silent" video even if there is no text, no picture?

In the other thread, I suggest people to record 100 techniques on video. This video will be perfect to attract new students for your website.

If your student can do everything in the following clip, should he deserve to have his 1st degree BB?

Your thought?

For a video, I'd agree.

For a website, I'd say the opposite. Knowing the culture of the school and the qualifications of the instructor is much more important to me than what specifically you would teach.

While these things can certainly be overdone, I would say they're worth having on your page. A lack of information about the history of the school and at least that of the chief instructor is seen by many (including me) as a red flag. Likewise, a 40 page treatise about an unlikely history of how your art was passed in secret through a man who cannot be named will also be a red flag. But a brief history of the system and the training/experience/rank of the instructor(s) is not at all a bad thing.

To be honest I love as much information as possible on a webpage for a style/dojo. Even their philosophy, what they do in a usual session, and more specifically what their club values or prioritises most; the direction and focus of a club gives a good idea whether it's suitable for a prospective student.

But I think a video or videos is actually a really great idea John :)

THAT being said, going to a school and watching is always going to better and will give a better idea of how the school is run, what happens on a day to day basis (which may indeed have changed from when they've put info on the website), and getting a feel for the instructors and how the material is taught.

But for oft-cautious, analytical introverts like myself, I love as much information as I can get before I go to a school to watch [emoji14]

who is the web site for ?

if its to attract beginners that will be majorly different perhaps than season MA,

theres a very real danger of giving them information over load or even putting them off all together

so what does a complete beginner need to know in order to give your school a try ?
its certain that reams of text to scroll through is a bad idea, you have maybe 5 seconds to catch their attention, before they move on to the next, short ,succinct and inspirational with bright colours seems to be the norm with advertising

This reminds me...here is what I submitted to my Master when he asked the instructors to write bios for the website. (I also gave him an actual bio to post):

[He is] one of the instructors at [our dojang]. Ladies, he’s single. He is a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo. After classes, he enjoys going out for a nice meal or taking a long moonlit walk. He primarily teaches the kids classes. Single mothers should take note: he’s good with kids.

[He has] been an instructor at [the dojang] for over five years, which shows his ability to follow through on commitments. He believes Taekwondo helps develop listening skills, because he is a good listener. He brings a sharp sense of humor and a keen understanding of Taekwondo to make sure that students can have fun while they’re learning martial arts.

I used video on a Martial Arts website. For us it was a must have. It give people the opportunity to see what a class looks like and the experience of the students and Instructors. One student watched our videos for 2 or 3 months before finally coming to try our school. 3 things I like to show. 1. Beginner level + Cardio exercises 2. Intermediate level + Cardio and strength building exercises 3. Intermediate level + Sparring and Forms.

If I can remember correctly the only history that we had on the site was that of the Instructors and some background on what Jow Ga Kung Fu is. We didn't get into the lineage stuff.

The one thing that I would say that is important is that your videos have to target a specific type of person. For the school, we didn't want anyone who didn't want to learn how to actually use Kung Fu. Our reasoning behind that is that was to attract students with similar interest and focus that the instructors have. I was all about learning how to actually use Kung Fu. The other instructor was more about forms. I like forms, but only in the context of being able to use the techniques that are in the forms. End result, the videos attracted people who wanted a lot of Kung Fu sparring and kids who were bullied. A lot of parents were interested either in the self-defense or it being an activity that they could do with their children. I made sure the website reflected this.

I do a lot of marketing and for me Video is a must, Online payment is a must, Online registration is a must, and a membership area is a must. The only way video can hurt a school is if you are a Horrible instructor, An instructor that doesn't know how to use what is taught, or if your teaching methods aren't inclusive.

Yeah you definitely have to have music. Even simple beginner stuff looks awesome with music. When I watch your video I see some positive things. Controlled sparring. Staff techniques actually being used, smiles on the faces. Mostly body expression where I just know your partner was grinning and saying. "man you got me". I like things like that because it doesn't have that negative image of physical abuse. It looks enjoyable. Hell I saw your video and instantly thought, where's this school at, then I thought. COVID-19 lol.

This is one of the videos that I made to show that our school worked on things like grappling, and take down defenses. The actual footage is not as exciting by a long shot, but I used music to give it a friendly feel. The video helps to show that we can do what we train. The biggest thing I wanted to high-light was, "Yes, we grapple." A person can say it, but it's much better when a person can show it.

Yet you have 8,522 posts on a website devoted to talking about martial arts.
Yeah but Wang shows a lot of what he does or what his students does. He's never been shy to show those videos.

When I try to express my opinion, I like to attach a video (or picture) to support it.
Sometime I use my own video. Sometime I use somebody else's video. I try not to use my own video all the time (people may think that I try to promote myself). But I do have over 1000 personal video on my computer. I have recorded everything that I could do when I was young (I suggest people to record what they can do when they still can).

When people get on my website johnswang.com, they can download the following clips. No talking just doing. I don't run commercial school any more. I don't mind to give information away for free.

Tree Kick
Chain Kick
Toe Kick
Forward Kick
Catch Front Kick
Catch High Round House Kick
Catch Low Round House Kick
Downward Pull

Is your website actually johnswang.com? Is that a typo for johnwang.com? I really hope so...

I know what you are thinking. :)

The website johnwang.com was taken. I have to use johnswang.com since my full name is John Shih-Yuan Wang.

王 Wang in Chinese = king

The original Chinese character 王 Wang came from the mark on top of the tiger's forehead - 3 horizontal lines and 1 vertical line.

The mark of tiger = king.

Just took a big risk going to that website. If you were focused on running a commercial school, I'd suggest changing it. As it is, doesn't matter, but that made me laugh.

- Wang means king in Chinese.
- Wang is a shortening of "wanger," in English.

Many years ago when China Airline used Phoenix as the company logo, the foreign business was very bad.

MGM Casino in Las Vegas used to have a lion head in the front. It's not there any more.

I think part of it is your American given name. If your name was Ming Wang or Hai Wang or something like that, it might be different.
