Maui is burning. Fortunately, the fire is not near us, but friends of mine have been evacuated from their homes. I cleaned the house this morning but now everything is covered in a thin layer of soot. had to shut all the windows, and man, it's hot.
OMG, be safe! You can come and stay with us! :)

They almost did not higher a guy in my office because he showed up dressed nice, but in sneakers. I saw his resume and told then if that is the only reason, they're idiots. He was HIGHLY qualified. He got the job, he was great, he now works in another office, alo due to his qualifications.

I may have told this story on MT before but.....I was on an interview team at my old office, 3 women and myself. We were interviewing for a clerk/typist position and it was summer. We were siting at a round table and a young woman came in wearing a sun dress that had a v neck that went half way to her navel. She came in, looked at the room, moved a chair to sit directly in front of me, leaned over on her elbows and did the entire interview, directly in front of me, in that position. I had no idea where to look while asking her questions and for weeks afterwards the other 3 women in the room made sure to harass me to no end about how obvious it was that I had no idea where to look and how uncomfortable I was during that interview.

She did not get the job, for that, but mainly for not being qualified for the job.
A mutual friend of ours (actually @gpseymour 's old school friend Marvin - ask him about Marvin, it's a fun story!) is an HR guy, and he does these little posts on FB, signed "people who hire". OMG, the stories he had told... Wow... it's like a whole bunch of people just went and totally lost any kind of clue as to what is appropriate during the hiring process - that is if they actually WANT to get hired. Not just what they wear to interviews, but returning phone calls, showing up on time, chewing gum, smelling like liquor - the works. I can totally understand why Marvin's hobby is to bake beautiful cakes - with his stress level, water, flour, and sugar are the only things he can stand to be around after work.

Had another one show up high, he did not get the job. Had another one show up and start telling us all about his "vast" computer experience. The other 3 on the interview team were not IT and all looked at me, and watched me ask this question. "So, how long ago did you work in IT?" He stopped, looked down, and said..."1968". This was in the mid 1990s. Everything he was bragging about was old, very old, mainframe stuff. He also did not get the job. And of course many who seemed entirely clueless as to what they were interviewing for or what they were supposed to know, and based on their lack of knowledge I can only assume that they gave us someone else resume by mistake. And then there were times, I had to tell the others on the "Interview Team" they could not ask that question because it was illegal.

I would not want to be working in Human Resources for all the tea in China...most of which I believe is currently in my house...I hated doing those interviews.

I will have to tell you about my experience and interview when I was testing and applying for a police department in NH someday.

A lot of people go on job searches not to get jobs, but just to continue getting services, that require proof you are looking for a job to receive

True, but all the jobs I was doing interview for were government jobs that they had to take a test, and pass the test, to actually get to the interview. That or they had to already be working for the state and looking to transfer.

I was just going to ask the same question? How did they get to the point of the interview? Or did they send a friend in to take a test for them? I assume you have to show valid ID when you go take tests for those jobs, don't you?

I only got to see the aftermath of the interview:
Oh, they took the pulse, checked respiratory functions YOU ARE HIRED!!!!
Miracles of nature, walking without even basic brain function.
never mind actually doing the job or being trainable!

I've had some interesting interviews in my day. One of which came full circle. I submitted a resume to a place for a job, was being interviewed, and the woman interview person was looking over my resume and said to me, "So, what do you want to be when you grow up?" I was forty years old. I said, "Excuse me?" She smirked. I politely ended the interview right there, got up and left.

Flash forward some years, I'm a Federal cop and guess who shows up at my facility and needs to be escorted and helped? That very same woman. She didn't recognize me, and why should she, our interview was thirty seconds long. I had somebody sign her in and I snuck off and called my boss, who she was about to see.

I guess he started off with "You didn't recognize the officer that escorted you in here did you? He's one of the best hires I ever made, one of my very best men"

Thirty seconds later she stormed out, red faced.

God, I so loved my boss.

I’m wondering if the donut spare was screwing with the ABS.
Donut spares most definitely do screw with ABS, electronic transmissions, and lots more. Very possibly something triggered by the spare.

My dad spent much of his working life in the Office of Personnel for an alphabet agency out of DC. Part of that time was in recruiting... He was doing pre-screening interviews of applicants and got to the point of the automatic disqualifier questions (ever been arrested, that sort of thing). Asks a guy about drug use, including marijuana. The applicant admits he has used marijuana... and my dad asked "when was the last time?" Guy looks at his watch... Seems he was a bit nervous about the interview, and smoked up in the restroom... Needless to say, he was done...

Thanks, Hobbit my pal. :)

The darn fire is still burning. The airport is still crazy because of it. Just spoke to a guy who told me the TSA line is out the door, across the terminal and well into the parking lot. I've never seen that before.

Sure glad I ain't working today. But I am wiping soot off of everything in the house. Had a tough workout earlier, going to be sore tomorrow.....but, now there is beer to drink.

Guy looks at his watch. Oh, man, ice coffee all over my computer now, right out my nose.

That needs to be in a movie.....guy looks at his watch. Priceless.
