The practicality of technique training

What are your thoughts on the practical application of techniques? How do you respond to someone who (reasonably and intelligently, as opposed to someone whose sole purpose is trolling) expresses doubts as to whether or not the techniques we train are applicable to "real world" self-defense situations?
I myself have my own thoughts on this, but being that I am so new to my Kenpo training (< 1 year), I'd like to know what the more experienced Kenpoists have to say on the topic.
